I think whether or not it’s a penalty is not the bigger issue here. The bigger issue is that it took the time from when he played the 5th hole until he finished his round, plus an additional 90 minutes to resolve this. Something like this shouldn’t take that long.

Bryson, we think you committed a penalty here, do you want to call it on yourself? Yes, ok. No, ok go to the video and we’ll decide.

Is there conclusive evidence it was committed, yes, penalty, no, no penalty.

That should not take 5 hours as they should’ve had the answer to the second question long before his round was over.

How about this.

Let’s say that tall clump was the ONLY grass over there above 6 inches. Would he be allowed to go squash it down with his feet?

Or would he, by rule, need to view his line from behind the ball while sidestepping that clump and staying in the shorter stuff?

From what I saw, it was the only grass that would be in his way. And he flattened it.

What do the rules say about that? I’m also ok if they don’t call it a penalty. I don’t hate Bryson and can sometimes even pull for him.

Is that like hitting behind a scoreboard and walking it backward 60 yards to make sure you can get it over it, see the pin, and put it in a better-manicured pasture, as some cheater idol of yours did?

I think there’s a rule where if an organization places a wall between where your ball is and your target, you can go backwards to avoid smacking your ball into the wall that the organization placed there.

Yeah it’s borderline. You see it pretty often but it did look like he stepped on the stuff behind his ball that could catch his club a couple of different times.

I think the R&A says he "manipulated" the rule to gain an advantage. I cannot recall the exact wording right now. But I do remember being like, "WTF is this?" when it happened.

He was he supposed to look at his shot? Without walking on grass? It was a chip/hack out 50 yard ish shot if it was a longer shot this improving the lie would be a bigger deal I don’t believe he affected anything and it didn’t affect his shot either. I guess you shouldn’t be able to walk to your ball in the sand cause you might be moving sand molecules
