USGA rule 8.1. I am guessing the R&A rules are the same.

Living plants (including trees, shrubs, bushes, grass, etc.)and their parts can’t be moved or altered, bent, broke off, etc. to improve your stance, swing, or line of play whether intentional or not.

There is a “stance exception.”
The "stance" exception: You are allowed to take a "reasonable and least intrusive stance". If a growing branch naturally moves out of your way as you take your regular stance or back into it, that is completely legal, as long as you don't use unnatural force to permanently alter the branch.

If it’s a huge clump of dead grass entangled in the fescue that is impeding the ball, is he allowed to move that? Because that also isn’t “growing in the ground” or attached to anything. I'm asking because I legit don’t know the rule.

Yes, he could move that. They move sticks, twigs, and pine straw all the time.

It happens all the time without getting called, but it’s usually not in front of a camera that’s 5 feet away.

It’s not like he went and stood on the grass to flatten it, but he knew what he was doing. He probably gets away with it if he walks through once, maybe even twice. He went through 3 or 4 times though.

If he doesn’t play tomorrow it would be the most childish move I’ve ever seen from a professional athlete.


I get you’re upset, but take it out on the golf ball tomorrow. He’s still right in this.

And he never took a club to determine if he could make an unimpeded swing, like you see almost every time.

He went straight to flattening shite behind his ball.

That one announcer spent way too long talking about how childish it would be, and how passive and non-confrontational he and his friends were back in the day. He clearly deserved the penalty, but that guy is full of shite acting like he doesn’t hate Bryson because of LIV.
