Sources: The American Athletic Conference is expected examine expansion this week, with six schools expected to send applications. The AAC is expected to receive an application from – FAU, Charlotte, North Texas, UTSA, Rice and UAB this week.
The expectation is that they will be accepted and the AAC will grow to a 14-team football league. (Also 14 teams in hoops.)

Does the AAC still have an the auto Big 6 bowl invite like they did in the mid 2000s?

No big MW team (Boise, San Diego, Colorado State) is a major disappointment.

UTSA needs to back up the Brinks teuck3and keep their HC.
Good timing for them to be good/ranked.

I wouldn't even entertain these applications, imo.
Assuming UCF, Houston, and Cincinnati are gonezo, my AAC would look like:
USF
ECU
Navy
Army
Temple
App St
Marshal
Memphis
Southern Miss
SMU
Tulsa
La Tech
Tulane
Louisiana
UAB
Mountain West would add
SMU
North Texas
UTEP

These schools have already been vetted behind the scenes, like OU/UT to the SEC. They are officially submitting applications as a formality. All will be accepted.

They're joining BYU in the Big 12 after Texas and Oklahoma leave, supposedly.

I wonder if they’re expecting to lose more. I wasn’t expecting them to go with this many teams.
La Tech is going have to hold its nose and take a Sun Belt invite.
