There were too many seasons where a third team had some real gripes to justify keeping it at just two teams, but there were just as many seasons where two was the correct number.
I don’t think there’s a perfect answer if you have to have a fixed number of teams. Taking the N highest ranked conference champions seems like the most objective way to do it, but a flexible number of teams can’t work for logistics reasons.
