Former NBA player Stephen Jackson came to the defense of ESPN’s Rachel Nichols, after she made comments about her colleague Maria Taylor, calling it a "diversity" hire when the 24-hour sports network gave her the hosting job of "NBA Countdown" during the 2020 NBA Finals inside the Orlando bubble.

The story came about after The New York Times on Sunday made public a leaked audio recording of Nichols, who failed to turn off her video camera following a live broadcast on the network.

Fox News

This might be an unpopular opinion on this board (I know it would be on the OT), but I actually like Maria Taylor. I liked her when she started off on the SEC Network, then went to Game Day and on...

There are several people who work for ESPN I think got promoted because of ESPN wanting to be more diverse, but Maria Taylor is actually good at her job.

I know Rachel Nichols wasn't happy about the list of names that Taylor's agent put out there saying Taylor deserves to make more than them or whatever (that's an agent's job. Get the most money possible for their client), but Jackson must be doing Nichols are something, because I can name a few black personalities on ESPN I would consider "sympathy" jobs and none of them are Maria Taylor.

Could Jay Williams, Jalen Rose & Kendrick Perkins get a job with any other network?

You can like Maria Taylor and also agree with Rachel. They don't have to be mutually exclusive. And I also agree she is great at CFB. Did not watch the NBA finals so I'm not sure on her performance in that instance

You would think ESPN would look at the TNT NBA cast and realize being too "woke" doesn't help.. Considering the crew on TNT wins awards after awards for the best NBA pre game show, best cast, etc, etc..

Maria Taylor is great. But she is not big time enough for that finals gig. That’s a big role and a premier spot. She hasn’t earned it yet. She would have in due time. Stuart Scott held that role for years.

Maria Taylor is easily one of the best talents they have at ESPN. Had she "earned" the NBA Finals gig yet? Probably not since she's still "new" to the game, but she's far and away one of their brightest stars.

I don't understand how Rachel Nichols has gotten so much work. Her voice is bad enough and her constant giggling on The Jump makes it unwatchable plus she embarrassed the hell out of Zion and everybody at the lottery drawing one year with all of her jabbering.

Not a mystery why Jack is white knighting her though

I can't be the only person that is freaked out by Rachel Nichols's mouth every time she used to say "I'm Rachel Nichols, ESPAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNN."
