Yep... Winnie the Pooh is banned in China because some people think he looks like President Xi. This is a real thing.

My question, which is admittedly ignoratn and probably silly, is what are these people (players, coaches, etc) afraid of?

If curry or kerr or whoever else came out and said "oh yeah man, that situation is awful. CAn't believe what they're doing over there, it's despicable. Those people deserve better" or something, what repercussions are they scared of? I realize china gives the NBA a lot of money, which is why this whole thing is an issue anyway, but it's not like the players or coahces are going to lose money somehow could they?

It's not a stupid question, especially if you haven't really kept up with the NBA over the past decade and a half or so.

The global market for basketball has exploded, and China is far and away the leader. There is massive money at stake if China's government sours on the NBA's presence, and given that the NBA's global appeal is what's driven their growth, they can ill afford to take that risk as a company.

Throw in the fact that China's government is incredibly sensitive during the best of times, the fact that this whole brouhaha began over an NBA exec's public support for anti-government protesters in Hong King makes it doubly tenuous for the NBA.

If I'm thinking the best of them, I'm thinking many of them might WANT to be as vociferous against China as they are railing against perceived domestic slights against social justice, but undoubtedly they've been warned by the powers that be to either feign ignorance or avoid the subject of indiscretions by the Chinese government altogether.

Are there salries and contracts directly related to the amount of revenue and TV markets the games bring in?

100% this. Players receive 50% of the league revenue by the CBA. If China pulls the plug, that loss of revenue would directly affect the player's future contracts.

And star players make a bunch of endorsements from Chinese companies.

To clarify-

Players currently under contract will receive their contract amount, possibly minus 8% which is held in escrow until the season’s Baskeball Related Income is calculated.

The most any one player under contract can lose as a result of this is 8% of their money.

Players NOT under contract is a different matter.

Changes in the cap directly affect how much can be offered to players, be it from available cap space (% limits on contract amount) or on various exceptions which are calculated to be x% of the contract amount.

A huge amount of players in the league just signed new contracts this offseason and are limited to taking an 8% per season hit as a result.

A few players like Anthony Davis are likely to take a bath on this between fewer potential landing spots and their max deal being calculated as a percentage of a smaller cap number.

i was told by all the snowflakes that when i didnt know enough about something to comment on it that ignorance was a choice. if i cared and was a decent human, i would take the time to research the topic and form an educated opinion.

is that not true anymore?

I would say the issues in Hong Kong and the issues in the United States are not mutually exclusive.

So we’re going to pick & choose what issues the players express now?

My point is that the NBA hardly focused on “black issues” with regards to Social Justice.

They focused on low hanging fruit to preen for the press and didn’t want to answer questions that would have actually required taking a hard stand.

Why not?

I’m sure there’s plenty of other unfortunate situations in the world that nobody in the NBA has commented about.

If China pull the plugs, those shoe companies will not sell as many shoes inside China. The shoe companies do not want to pay as much as now.

Well that is where taking a hard stand comes in.

They want to act like they are Jackie Robinson, Muhammed Ali, Jim Brown, and Bill Russell rolled into one? Take a stand that may have actual consequences.

It’s easy to get on a moral soapbox attacking things everyone hates or that won’t cost you money. It takes real courage to bite the hand that feeds.

Much easier to stand up for family and friends vs. people halfway around the world.

You were the idiot who said they only speak about "black issues".

Someone pointed how you're wrong.

Move along.
