Also for the Jordan I would have him send into psa to see if if it would get a psa 10, if not it stays in the bgs holder. Mainly bc if it grades a psa 10, he could be looking at 300-500k compared to 80-100k

Probably wont with the 9 on the surface. A PSA 9 is significantly less than that 9.5

you got any insight on my follow up question about the process with PWCC?
He's wanting to keep it if it auctions less than x amount

I am aware but you can have them only put in a psa case if it comes out a 10, if it’s a 9, they leave it in the original case. Now the downside you would have to pay the cost regardless if a cross-over happens. So you would set grade at 10 and if they don’t deem a 19 they leave it in the case.

Only basketball set I ever bought growing up during the 1980's was the 1985 star all rookie team set: Jordan, Stockton, Akem, Barkley. I have them all in plastic card holders but none are graded.

Pretty sure you would still be charged the full grading fee, which would probably be well over $1k

Luckily, if he wanted to do that, those level of subs are the only ones PSA is taking right now

Yep that’s why I said you would need to pay the price regardless. High risk high reward potential. I mean I agree with only the one 10 sub grade and the the 9 prolly prevents it.

Spending 1k at a 10-20% chance of a card being worth another 400-500k seems like a chance I would be willing to take considering the floor value of the 9.5 bgs is still around 100k.

But I do tend to agree, I don’t know how much of a chance it has to be a PSA 10. If your 9 was on Centering and the 10 was on Surface, I’d say you might have a better shot because PSA doesn’t care as much about centering as BGS and if a card looks visually appealing “aka surface is extremely clean and free of defects and nothing major going on corners and edges wise, a lot of times those end up earning psa 10 grades.

I think it’s definitely worth a shot though. Before PSA suspended most of their submissions a good strategy was to submit a throwaway card or two in front of the main one you want/needed the high grade on.

For example, put one with an obvious surface, corner or edge issue on the top that might earn a 7-8, then submit an 8 or 9 type card as your 2nd card, and then you throw your 9.5 fleer michael jordan card in at the bottom. It can kind of jedi mind trick their minds up a bit. If the first two cards are 8 and 9 and the michael jordan is a clear cut above both quality wise then they might just feel obligated to grade it as a 10. Because it wouldn’t feel quite right to grade 2 cards as a 9 when 1 is clearly better than the other.

Same, I’ve submitted near 1000 cards I’m sure, never gotten a bgs or psa 10. Plenty of true gems but never been able to cross one either

Y'all must be rough with your cards or something because I've gotten more 10s then I can count between sports and Pokemon.

If I notice they're OC beyond PSA's parameters, I don't even bother sending them in (for modern cards at least)

Anyone have any recs on the top loader size for your standard relic card? I’ve bought three different sizes and they are either too small or way too big lmao.

What sizes have you bought already?

130pt is usually a good guess for relic thickness, I’ve got 180s which I’ve never come close to using they’re so thick.

I was a collector as a kid and have a pretty nice stock of MLB, NFL, and NBA, specifically players from the 90's.

Huge Chipper Jones fan and spent at least a grand on his cards at various shows. I'm looking to sell my collection because I've been out of the game for a while and honestly don't have the time or interest anymore. If anyone is interested in looking through what I've got or even purchasing the whole collection, drop your email.

what do you mean by high risk here? Want to make sure I understand. If the floor is 80k as you said, 1k seems pretty worth it to see if it can garner more?
Appreciate all the responses

Package gets lost in shipment to/from PSA then you have to deal with getting your insurance money, TAR times, etc

If he lives close to a PSA location I would definitely consider doing a walk-through. Hell, even if he doesn't, I would probably rather fly to a PSA location and do a walk-through instead of shipping

I’ve got the 180’s and then the standard I guess 80 pt.

I’ll try a 130 next. Thanks for the rec.

Thank you
Looking at the rates, it looks like 3k for up to 99k declared value, and 5k for up to 249k.
If you're doing a walk-through, might as well do the 3k option, right?
