A team source tells me HC Jason Garrett’s contract expires on January 14th so it is possible that we may not hear any word until then. It would not be a firing it would simply be a decision to not renew #Cowboys

Jason can reflect that on his resumes when employers ask if he was fired

Only problem is that every team with an opening will have a two week head start on the Cowboys. The desirable college coaching candidates like Riley and Rhule won’t wait around that long and all of the coaching candidates in the playoffs outside of the ones in the conference championship games will be scooped up as well.

I don’t know Garrett’s contract but would they owe him money if they “fired” him as compared to waiting for his contract to end?

Why? It would be entirely ceremonial.

If he isn't coming back next year, firing him now just means he's gone 15 days earlier. Either way, he isn't coaching another game for them.

Literally makes no difference.

If the Cowboys are planning to just let Garrett's contract expire, nothing is stopping them from interviewing new candidates in the meantime. Jerruh just needs to put out a statement thanking Garrett for his time in Dallas and saying they've decided to go in a different direction and not offer him a new contract.

If that’s what they decide to do then Jerry must have really thought highly of JG. Pretty classy IMO

he and jerry are close friends so this is just to save face for both so he doesnt get fired and just "moves on" having finished his contract

it is better then being fired or forced to resign, but not by much, but it is better for them if they are truly close friends as is reported

seems like a semantics game. All jerry needs to say is "we're moving on", he doesn't have to "fire" Garrett.

Not really, Cowboys would owe the balance of his contract, which is about 2 weeks' pay if the 1/14/20 date is accurate.

I'm sure Jerry has gotten his money's worth already, the 2 week's severance won't be a big deal.
