Someone explain to me how Lincoln Riley can never field a competent defense?

It blows my mind. He's clearly a smart guy and hires good assistants (although Grinch, ehh).
Does he just not care about that side of the ball think he doesn't need it? Does his offense really limit how good his defense can be because of their tempo/speed in which they score? Yesterday that couldn't have been the case though, they had long drives.
Even Mike Leach fielded some really strong defenses. So it's not all Air Raid guys.
Not only does his defense usually suck, but they often get worse throughout the year. He just needs a top 30/40 defense to win 95% of his games with his offense.
If you look at his Scoring Defense and YPP ranks the last 5 years (not counting 2020 COVID year, so 2017-2022), this is where his teams have ranked:
Scoring Defense/YPP:
2017 – 68th / 82nd
2018 – 101st / 102nd
2019 – 64th / 63rd
2021 – 58th / 79th
2022 – 93rd / 124th (USC)
Average – 77th / 90th
That’s consistently bad and it’s not all because a lack of talent.

Because he won’t fire Grinch

A lot of defense is culture. No one would describe Riley’s programs as bastions of physicality or grit.

I've read that his practices have a lot to do with this. His practices are designed to get as many reps as possible and they minimize hitting to make sure they can do this.
It shows on the field.
It shows on the field.

The defense sucked but that team broke down in the last 4 minutes.

Its wild when a team like KState will field a significantly better defense in the same conference. Sure the wheels sometimes come off against an elite offense, but like you said, that would at least keep him from the head scratching losses he falls victim to every year

Because he’s a quintessential pussy and wears lululemons on the sidelines.

I honestly think it's possible USC could field a competent defense in a couple of years.
Almost all of their transfer talent was on the offensive side of the ball, however. They have a lot of ground to cover to develop a strong defensive philosophy and develop recruits.

Lincoln not firing Grinch after what Burrow did to them tells you everything you need to know.

Some coaches just suck at some aspect of the game. Like Muschamp with offense

Meh. Up to that point Tulane made 1 more mistake then them. The dropped pass right before half which was at least a 7pt swing but probably a 10-14pt swing bc USC was not stopping Tulane.
The breakdown was Riley taking the ball out of his Heisman winning QB’s hands at the 1yd line on BACK TO BACK plays.

He’s had talent on defense at Oklahoma. Definitely as much or more than a lot of his competitors, and still sucked.
Forgive me if I don’t think more talent is bringing his USC defense into the top 30.

This is why you never see Air Raid offenses with great defenses. It’s not just that they score quickly. It’s the incomplete passes that make the game exponentially longer. Longer games = More plays played. When you ask your defense to play 40 more snaps, they’re going to give up more points.
That’s straight from several friends that played D1 and in the NFL.

He caters to his offensive prima Donna's. Tells them during recruiting that they will not get hit at practice. It carries over to a weak no tacking D. Plus Grinch and his speed d puts emphasis on smaller size, not SEC types.

Well that wasn’t the case this game. USC’s defense was very well rested bc USC dominated TOP (40 min to 20min) and USC ran 30 more plays than Tulane. USC Defense was just atrocious.

Do you have anything to back this up, I find it hard to believe.

Really Strong is a stretch but he has had some decent ones
2000 - 39th
2001 - 43rd
2005 - 19th
2007 - 50th
2009 - 41st
2016 - 50th
2018 - 42nd
7 defenses in the top 50, 8 in the 51 to 97 range and 2 defenses outside the top 100, I would have thought that number would have been higher.

He had at least 1 top 15 defense at WA State following several years of improvement on that side of the ball.

are you just assuming this?
Lincoln Riley's defensive plays the last 5 years.
2022 - 65 plays per game defended on average
2021 - 68
2020 - 67
2019 - 63
2018 - 74
2017 - 68
by comparison, lets just look at K-State since they were referenced here
2022 - 68 plays per game defended (37th in scoring defense)
2021 - 64 (23rd in scoring defense)
2020 - 73 (84th in scoring defense)
2019 - 60 (27th in scoring defense)
2018 - 68 (111th in scoring defense)
2017 - 73 (50th in scoring defense)
KSU average plays defended per game - 68
average scoring defense 55th
Riley average plays defended per game - 63
average scoring defense 77th
maybe there's simply something about how he coaches a team as a whole that tends to make his defenses not as good for whatever reason.
