So much focus Texas HS fb gets in their state. Why isn't UT a perennial title contender?

They've always seemed to be a juggernaut program to me, but their championship disposition has always been checkered.

Texas Football is a numbers game. But I don't think per capita they actually produce that many great players compared to Florida. Louisiana per capita is ridiculous for how many high caliber players we put out for the size we are.

Because there’s lots of colleges in Texas, and also they compete with Oklahoma for recruits, and also LSU, and other schools, etc.

There's coaching also. I mean UT could get half of the top recruits in Texas with the other half being spread out and they should be a title contender.

Because they are fricking lazy recruiters.

They basically choose who they want as freshmen and sophomores in HS and offer them then. They don’t take chances on late bloomers and if anyone whom they offer doesn’t immediately commit, they move on.

Texas has a big time issue with big money donors. They can't get out of their own way. For the stature of the schools and their recruiting grounds they underperform way more often than they should.

There is value of playing through the rigors of an incredibly intense schedule. Your players rise to another level. This is why the SEC is continually successful.

Most other conferences - Big 12 included - have one or two big names and a lineup of creampuffs. The players just don't get the same level of grit and experience playing against mediocre competition, so when on the biggest stage they don't rise to the same occasion.

List of top 2021 recruits in Texas

ETA: can't get the link to automatically go to the 2021 list, just click "2021" to see the list I'm referencing

Of the top 25 prospects in the state of Texas, Texas only has 2 of them (#3 and #19)

TAMU has 8
Bama has 4
Oklahoma has 4
LSU has 2
Ohio St has 1
Auburn has 1
Clemson has 1
Tennessee has 1
SMU has 1

Even going past the top 25, the next highest recruit in their state that Texas has is #36. There's no reason Texas should be getting btfo for the best talent in their own state. Idk if it's the SEC prestige causing these kids to go (16 of these top 25 prospects went to SEC schools), or just lazy and entitled recruiting on UT's part, or a combo of both

There isn't just one reason, I think it's a combination of reasons. One being that there's a saying that UT recruits from the country club. They also chase fast and shiny instead of building from the trenches. Even during the last decade that they've sucked, they haven't struggled to recruit the perimeter players on either side of the ball. It's the lack of OL and DL recruiting that's killing them. It's akin to having a Ferrari with a Honda engine.

Lastly, and I'm not sure if this has changed, but they used to have a policy where they wrapped up all of their recruiting by the end of the player's junior year. Another poster touched on it but Texas really doesn't take a lot of late bloomers or guys who come onto the scene their senior year. That's a really dumb policy

i wonder if Texas is too focused on the large schools there???? their class 6A is 245 schools, all bigger than any 5A school in Louisiana, and you could pick a P5 recruiting class just from them alone, but in other states, to pick a recruiting class, you need players from big AND small schools.

they miss out on the dudes who get it out the mud

Texas has 12 FBS schools plus all the others like LSU, Alabama, OU, Okie Light, and Arkansas that heavily recruit the state. Sure it's a big state w/a ton of talent but there are a shite load of mouths to feed.

Several reasons, and it’s not too hard to figure out.

Schools like Ohio State and Oregon feasted on Texas HS talent and compete for titles. LSU and Bama raid the state. Oklahoma gets their share. Recruiting is national now. The best athletes pick their school. Why would they stay home in TX when they can go compete for a natty?

Technology allows these kids to video chat with friends and family whenever. The NIL will make it easier for families to move to the college town or frequently visit. You don’t have to stay home anymore.

a "shite load" is understating it

it's easier to count the teams that DON'T have a Texas kid than to count the teams that do

OU isn't in Texas, but it's always been sort of a de-facto Texas college because they've recruited so many Texas kids. When Arkansas was in the Big XII, and especially the SWC, they were a de-facto Texas school. LSU has always gotten a few Texas guys too.

Ohio State, and Alabama, have started cherry picking some of the state's very best players. Some kids that can qualify are now going to Stanford. It's kind of crazy to see UGA and the Florida schools getting Texas kids, considering how many in-state recruits they both have available. Urban recruited Texas when he was at Florida. 5-star DE Jarvis Moss was one of the cornerstones of the2003 Florida class, and was a big part of their 2006 Natty.

Big camps, social media, and national recruiting sites have made recruiting a national endeavor. Even though it seems like some states have an unlimited number of kids to recruit, losing the very best kids to OOS schools hurts flagship programs.

Texas HS football has really good coaching and huge schools all over the state. However, it also often resembles a glorified 7on7 competition.

The state produces a lot of polished recruits, and those are the types of players Texas recruits. I don’t think they’ve had an offensive lineman drafted in the first round since Leonard Davis and Mike Williams, and only a small handful drafted overall in the last 20 years.

Their DL talent hasn’t been much better. Those positions are harder to scout and a lot of those big boys develop late. UT isn’t very good at identifying, recruiting, or developing linemen.
