Small chance the baby cakes may not be moving to Wichita

You can take the team out of Louisiana but you can’t take the Louisiana out of the team
Couple quick comments.
1. Lol at $1 an acre
2. I’ve been very happy with the government here since I’ve moved but damn if this doesn’t reek of some shady stuff.
3. Still want them to come

Wichita city officials could have told the public sooner about a side deal to help bring a Minor League Baseball team to town, Mayor Jeff Longwell said Thursday. Earlier in the week he said he couldn’t because of league rules.
Over the course of 18 months, the owners of the New Orleans Baby Cakes, led by Lou Schwechheimer, negotiated a deal with city leaders to move to Wichita, but the city had to build a stadium and offer it land to develop around the stadium.
That the move was contingent on the development deal was not made public until Monday, months after Lawrence-Dumont Stadium was torn down and as a new stadium is being built.
“If we don’t sign it, they’re not coming,” Longwell said Monday of the deal.

Wichita is offering the owners of the team up to 4.5 acres of city-owned property around a taxpayer-funded stadium for $1 an acre, with the option to buy another property across the river within the next 10 years for between $1 million and $1.5 million

There would probably be a lot more interest in the Baby Cakes if they didn’t play out on The Shrine on Airline. Brutal location for minor league baseball.
I hope this deal goes through for Wichita.

First the no call in NFCCG, then the Anthony Davis drama, then the Will Wade suspension, and now the Baby Cakes May be leaving. Shitty 2019 for Louisiana sports so far

Thank God we only give sweetheart deals for major league sports.

It has been known for months that the Baby Cakes we’re leaving. There has already been talks about turning the Shrine into a soccer/rugby stadium.

And if Wichita gets the team, I at least hope they change the name to something not as ridiculous as their current one.
Baseball and "Baby Cakes" just don't seem to go together, much like oil and water.

There’s been some good names floated around here. I just hope it’s not something cheap and cheesy. I’m willing to put big money down it’s gonna be something aerospace related
Or the keepers thanks to this guy

Witchita baby cakes. Just as great a name as Utah Jazz.

I would not want a team with the shitty nickname of Babycakes to represent my city. Downright embarrassing.

I wish this shitty team would leave now.
It’s a shame we have to put up with them for another season.

No it really isn’t.
The Zs has no problem filling the seats in the 90s to early 00s. Houston historically has one of the best farm systems and you had a ton of talent come through NOLA. The Mets and Marlins, otoh, aren’t. Especially the marlins. That organization trades away any talent they have. Add to it that the city hates the rebrand and it only serves to further alienate that locals from the team.
I can remember going to packed Zs games on Friday nights. People will watch good baseball. And the stadium is perfectly serviceable for the city. You aren’t putting a ballpark like TD Ameritrade in downtown NOLA.

I am appreciative for the cakes because i was able to get this
but besides that, the babycakes are pretty irrelevant. I never hear anyone say anything about going to a game.

The Wichita city council voted to move forward to sell the 4 acres of land to the team owners last night at $1 per acre. The deal is going through in Wichita.
The dealings with this have been shady as hell. It seems like it is relatively mild fleecing compared to other cities that have dealt with MLB and MiLB though. I'm glad the deal is getting done and I'm excited to see affiliated baseball in Wichita again.
