SI article on Wisc football: badgers are done with ground and pound, revolution underway

Meet the new Bucky. Not the same as the old Bucky. What could be described as the most comfortable program in college football—rooted in continuity, staunchly wedded to an old-school ethos, proudly bland, same as it ever was—has left its comfort zone. Wisconsin has broken its mold and is being rebuilt in a daring, fresh image.
A staffer described the program’s 30-year identity, from Barry Alvarez to Bret Bielema to Gary Andersen to Paul Chryst, as “the little engine that could.” The Badgers now want to be the full-grown engine that will.
The aspirations now are to move up alongside Ohio State and Michigan at the top. There is a greater urgency, a sharper edge, a renewed push to take the Badgers where they’ve never been before.
“Luke believes, as do I, that there’s no ceiling on us at Wisconsin,” McIntosh says.
During a recent scrimmage in Camp Randall Stadium, Wisconsin quarterback Tanner Mordecai fired a bullet to Braelon Allen running a circle route out of the backfield. Allen hauled it in and kept possession through a hard shot from a safety in the end zone for a touchdown.
That one play said a lot about how different Badgers football is going to be in 2023.
The play originated without a huddle and from the shotgun formation. The offensive linemen were pass protecting out of the wide splits that come with an Air Raid offense. The play was in the red zone, but there was no fullback to be found. Mordecai wore an SMU uniform for his previous two seasons, and an Oklahoma uniform the three before that. The 245-pound Allen has had 437 touches from scrimmage in two seasons of college ball without recording a touchdown reception.

Ask Nebraska how this worked out for them.
Changing the identity of a program is a lot harder than one thinks

Lol. Funny thing is go back and look at Ferentz offenses from the 2000s and how dynamic they were. Brad Banks, Heisman runner-up. Iowa can do that style, and I think you may see it come back.

This only works if he can recruit the skill players to do it. And Wisconsin doesn’t have a ton….Similar to Nebraska .
But fickell might be able to pull some from Ohio.

What could go wrong

Gonna be weird seeing Wisconsin throw it all over the place.

Phil Longo had AJ Brown, DK Metcalf, and Dawson Knox and couldn’t make a bowl game. I’ll believe it when I see it

Nebraska has tried this for almost 20 years and it hasnt gone well

Unless Wisconsin is able to recruit at a higher level than they've been doing, you can kiss those Top 10-15 finishes goodbye.

They had a nice selling point to offensive linemen and RBs...A niche...for players, otherwise not historically wanting to be in Wisconsin just like NFL players didn't want to be traded to Green Bay.
Also, see Bill Callahan's wholesale overhaul at Nebraska to the WC offense.

There’s a reason they’re ground and pound in the Big Ten… they can’t win the other way

RIP Wisconsin football.

yup... seeing those texas tech/mike leach offenses look fun on TV, but they had a large, local recruiting base from where they could get those players. the state of wisconsin and nearby states don't really have the same level of talent to compete at a high level to play with an air-raid style offense

My thought exactly. It’s fine to change but there has to be the right talent and patience to see it through.

It will work better for Wisc. They get better WR talent there than at Neb

Longo is the best OC in major CFB.

The school produces a lot of skill players. The problem is they are all RBs and TEs.
Wisconsin’s offense has fallen off over the last 10-12 years. They struggle to produce points and yards, often finishing in the bottom half of FBS. Paul Chryst had very productive offenses when he was the OC, but was never able to replicate that success once he came back as head coach.
Aranda and Leonard were able to consistently have top 10 defenses over that same span, despite not having anything close to elite DB talent. One reason is they were able to utilize their more talented Front 7 to cover up deficiencies in the defensive backfield.
I don’t know if a complete overhaul is the best approach, but Wisconsin’s philosophy was no longer working. Over the last five seasons their offense has been ranked 62, 23, 89, 85, and 77. They need to do something to create more production and points, and absolutely need it to result in better QB play.
