Gundy said yesterday that he knew the rule but when the ref said untamed down, he doubted himself and thought maybe it changed and added that because it was still a long shot for them to get the TD, he pretty much just let it go.

All game film should be reviewed by 7 "Supreme Officials".

After opening arguments and presentation of evidence by both schools, the SO will deliberate and announce their decision within 5 years.

After 5 years, no appeals.

I don't know what the answer is for the CMU vs OSU scenario, but this is such stupid rhetoric. Why would you allow a play that happened 20+ years ago to impede on improving the process moving forward? By rule Colorado lost that game. Everywhere else, they didn't. It's unfortunate, but that doesn't mean we use that as justification for not changing things 20+ years later.

And I'm not saying I think anything should be changed either. I just don't think saying, "If they didn't change Colorado's 5th down then they can't change this" is the right way to look at it.

Yes. Take stats away from last play, final scored is 27-24 OSU

In this case it was either Gundy knowing about the rule and trying to win with that BS heave
I mean, does it really matter if a guy ran straight down field for the QB to throw the ball downfield and out of bounds?

The untimed play makes sense in many instances, it really makes no sense to dictate, by rule, that CMU get an untimed play because of an offensive penalty on 4th down.

To me the rule should change to have allowed for that untimed down. If a team is leading and commits a turnover and a penalty against the offense occurs there should be an untimed down. As for the question the answer is no.

That's my opinion too. You should NEVER be officially rewarded for breaking the rules.

It seems to me the rule about no untimed play makes sense only if it is not 4th down. When there's no change of possession, you would be rewarded by getting an extra play, and the current rule prevents that, but in the very specific situation we saw, where there is a change in possession, calling the rule as written rewards you for 'cheating'.

What the rules committee ought to do is publish a clarification that makes what the refs did the correct call from now on.

Does the NCAA have a catch-all rule about 'the refs can do whatever, to keep the game fair'?

I know it will never happen. But can cmu retroactively forfeit the game, giving ok st. The win?

Absolutely not. You don't rectify a broken rule by breaking a different rule:

quote:

Rule 1 - The Game, Field, Players and Equipment
Winning Team and Final Score
1-1-3-b
When the referee declares that the game is ended, the score is final.

Also, Oklahoma St got some gift officiating in order to score their go-ahead touchdown, and the refs picked up a holding flag that never should be picked up. We don't rectify officiating errors after the game. Wrong calls stay wrong. We don't just correct one after the fact, ignoring the other wrong calls.

By rule the game was over. There was no time left on the clock. It was an untimed play that was only allowed to happen since the officials on the field and in the booth did not know the rules.

NO. that is part of the beast!

Only really makes sense when the accepted penalty wipes out the previous play, which is basically a re-do situation.

Makes no sense to run an untimed down after a change of possession.

I don't think they should change the result, though. Too big a can of worms.

No. Okie State should have protested the decision on the field. Since they didn't, it's too late.

Agree on both accounts.

He should have gotten to one of the refs right then and there to get an explanation before they had time to set up the last play.

Meh. There's a distinction between judgment calls (like holding) and procedural calls (like just knowing the rules and calling the game accordingly.)

They at least have the leeway to award points at their discretion (I mean the refs during the game.)

What are you saying the spirit of the rule is? I believe it explicitly says no continuation upon intentional grounding.

The issue there is Mizzou would have gotten the ball back with 2 seconds on the clock on their own 1 yard line.

that and the play on the real 4th down might have been different if they knew it was actually 4th down, and didn't think it was 3rd down.

Nope... you don't go down the wormhole of retroactively overruling on-field in-game decisions by the officials.

Just because in this one case it could be done, doesn't mean it should be done.

Everyone knows Oklahoma State got screwed, the NCAA acknowledged it, penalized the officiating crew... leave it at that.
