Shaq was such a freak

I saw today that Embiid has missed almost 50% of his games.
Zion has probably missed more games than he has played
Yao was done at 28 essentially.
To be as tall, as strong and athletic as Shaq was and still play 77% of his teams games makes you realize how freakish he was.

Shaq is about 5 years older than me so i watched him a lot in college and NBA and was/is a huge fan of his.
I watched some highlights of him the other day , and i think of him as one of the most dominant NBA players ever. And was amazed just how dominant he was. I realized it then and i guess just forget seeing watered down bigs now of just how unstoppable he was in his prime.

I remember watching an LSU game back in the early 2000s, and Stromile Swift was having a great year. The broadcasters said that he had just made #2 on the all time block list with 200-something blocks.
Then they showed #1: Mr. O'Neal at 400-something.

not to mention nobody was abused as much as Shaq. He was hacked constantly...but he was so strong the officials wouldn't call some of the fouls

Jokic is a closer comparison to Shaq, he doesn’t miss a lot of games

Prime giant Shaq was so physically dominant that he was playing a different game than anybody else in the history of basketball.
With the way he bullied guys and pushed them around on offense he could have fouled out every game if the refs had chosen to call it differently. It really was Shaq rules.

i guess that is one way to look at it if you completely ignore how physical they defended him. just bc he didn't flop and was hard to push out of the block doesn't mean they weren't being physical with him.

Jokic is a better all around basketball player, but Shaqs physical dominance in his prime with his ability to stay on the floor may never be seen again.
Jokic is insane

Shaq, when he came to the league, was one of the biggest freak shows in the history of sports. Physically there has never been anyone like him before or since. 7'1" of just solid muscle, didn't move like a big man, and had a vertical of 36". His standing vertical reach was 12'5"

Christ on a cross dude, he was simply comparing their abilities to play a similar %’s of games as a big man. Ease off the racism this morning.

i thought about Jokic but his game isn’t the same. it does lend itself to health a little better.

What a weird thing to say.

They're entirely different players. Jokic is a lot closer to Shaq in the paint than Shaq was to Jokic anywhere else on the court though. Shaq couldn't be stopped under the basket, particularly in the LA years when he was a lot heavier. Jokic is a very respectable player in the paint, obviously not to shaq's level- but his passing and shooting is a different sport compared to what Shaq could do.
It's like comparing Calvin Johnson to Jerry Rice

Jokic might be the best player to play the game not named Jordan or LeBron…
Dude is a machine and better all around player than Shaq.
Jokic is top 3 in all 3 of the major statistical categories and averages currently are:
30.0 points per game (3rd in league)
13.4 rebounds per game (3rd in league)
10.2 assists per game (2nd in league)
Fwiw he’s also 3rd in league in 3PT% at 47.4%
He’s a BEAST!

Jokic is shooting 3's this year almost as well as Shaq shot FT's.

Jokic is incredible, his game isn’t shaq’s game. He’s not jumping 3 feet of the ground and landing his 280 pounds in his joints all night.

1993-1994 MVP voting
Hakeem - 1383 games in 18 seasons
David Robinson - 1110 games in 14 seasons
Pippen
Shaq - 1423 games in 19 seasons
Ewing - 1322 games in 17 seasons
Four 7 footer hall of famers that each played an average of 75 to 79 games a season including playoffs but over 100 in some seasons. The best year for true big men in NBA history. All ridiculously athletic for their size.
Note that this was a season when MJ was in baseball.

that jump shot is sooo weird too.
Europe puts out so many skilled bigs but their game wouldn’t work if they were 6’4”
Dennis Shroader is the only good euro under 6’6”

Shaq just wasn't built like any other 7 footer. If you had looked at him in an all white room with no context clues to extrapolate size he was built like a normal very muscular 6 footer. He didn't look like a Stretch Armstrong pulled out just a little too much. Really tall people just aren't built like he is. A true freak of nature.
