I’m curious as to who actually expected the CFP to outperform the NFL in number of viewers.

NFL is king. There's no American sports league that can compete with the NFL in viewership.

Those weren't bad numbers for the CFB playoff games really.

Agree. Compared to the NFL, everything looks minuscule. Compare those numbers, especially the Friday night and Saturday night games, to the NBA Finals or the World Series and it paints an entirely different picture. I think the NYD games are going to do huge numbers.

CFP games were on HBO Max is why it's so skewed. But NFL always outperforms college football anyhow.

Everyone who has ATT cell phone service gets HBO Max Free.
But so many don't know this. You just login to HBO Max App and select provider to authenticate and pick ATT. Then use phone to authenticate using ATT cell service account credentials and BAM. you got HBO Max.

You cut your viewership by not having over the air network coverage. Not everyone has cable

College football emulating NFL will actually destroy it because you aren't gonna outdo them.

College football had a lot going for it unique only to it but they threw it all away.

Kinda an angled title tho. Cable never gets similar ratings as broadcast. Ever.

And the broadcasted games did end up in the same zip code.

Like 90 of the top 100 most watched TV events each year are NFL games. An average MNF game draws more than the Final Four.

and almost all of them are less than 5% of the population

The Super Bowl (most watched event every year) only gets about 15% of the population, if you believe the estimates.

That’s false

15% of the US population is like 50 million people and the Super Bowl routinely draws 100 million or more

You are correct. I was looking at the wrong numbers.

The network vs network games are comparable though obviously not head to head. It's why ESPN simulcasts their big games on ABC and ESPN, because the network broadcasts will always get the better numbers.

Now granted, 7 of the 11 are existing games and can be compared to prior years one on one. But the 4 last week are all bonus viewers. Even though NFL beat them overall the college games were pure bonus

That was not much of a bonus. The 1st round games were glorified irrelevant bowl games. None were competitive. It was a boring money grab. Other than the first quarter hype they were unwatchable. Far cry from an NFL wildcard week.

I’m shocked that some of you are surprised. NFL always wipes the floor w/college when it goes head to head. It’s the entire reason Thursday night CFB on ESPN no longer airs premier games.

My point is they were not designed to beat NFL. Rather they are 4 extra games and if they do 15m combined thats 15m more than if not playing them.

And in future they likely do get some good close games. Its also a lot of extra revenue for those home cities.

Thats the main point, they drew more eyes at a time you normally only have popcorn state bowls. To that end they likely siphoned some of the NFL viewers even if thats not the goal.

do we have to go thru this again???

fantasy football, daily ff, office pools, gambling, etc that's why people watch.

it's not the quality, it's the fact that they have cash in some way or another on the game.
