This week in the NFL was the bomb back in the day. I was 10 years old and remember watching that live in Michigan. My pops freaked out…..

Another fun fact... I was 12 years old and at the stadium that day. We were in the opposite end zone of the kick (Audubon Park side). When Dempsey kicked the field goal, this wave of sound just hit us in the opposite end zone. It was like a shock wave. Good times

I met Dempsey at a parade downtown back in the mid 80s. Very nice guy / east going.

Those two interview clips of him from ‘71 and ‘83 at the end of the video were great.
Good thread.

Looks good with half a foot…but watching toe-blow kickers is cringy.

Great piece.

Had no idea how improbable the circumstances were that allowed them to get in position for the kick.

me neither. The Lions went up 2 with a FG with :11 seconds left. If a team kicks a FG with :11 to take a lead that’s practically the game winner in my mind right there.

Helps the Saints only had to get to the 37-yard line to be in range for that 63-yd kick with the FG posts being at the goal line then.

The WR, Dodd, made a heckuva catch.

The kick doesn’t even look real it traveled so far. It’s incredible. But that catch was definitely top notch.

My grandparents got last second tickets and walked over since they lived down the block from Tulane Stadium (and are still doing great living in that same house to this day!)

Found this newspaper my dad kept from the game in his attic. Pretty cool.

How he kicked it that for with such little momentum is incredible!

His follow-through was pretty epic. Modern punters don’t even kick that high. Modern kickers barely get their foot above the belt line.

My Dad was at the game and he and his group left early. He did not know the Saints won that game till he got home. I know he brought the game program home and the ticket stub, but I have no idea whatever became of those pieces of Saints history.

Thanks for posting that.
