62.67 yards, to be more accurate.

I wonder how Billy Kilmer is nowadays?
He is 84. Hope he is doing well.
I think Dempsey passed away years ago. RIP, Tom.

Not only Cricqi, but hearing the voices of Pat Summeral and John Facenda (sp) on that clip just makes you “feel” like football.

Very cool piece of history. My dad was there as well, and as another poster said, most people had left or were leaving and missed it all.

What's crazy about that clip is I see two future ten year NFL vets, Ken Burrough (Oilers Pro Bowler) and Doug Sutherland (Vikings) on the Saints in the fight scene. They also had another future Pro Bowler Jim Otis (Cardinals) on the team who can be seen coming out of the backfiled on the final pass (#35). And all were rookies in 1970.

My dad worked the games on the sidelines... He said when Dempsey hit it, it sounded like a cannon going off.

Awesome. Thanks. That NFL Films music and the voice of John Facenda brings back a lot of memories.

#71 on Detroit is Hall of Fame DT Alex Karras .….or Mongo from Blazing Saddles.
From an article a couple years ago:
A couple nights later Alex Karras, the Lions’ star defensive lineman and four years “Mongo” in the movie “Blazing Saddles,” was on The Tonight Show. Johnny Carson asked him why the Lions didn’t appear to rush the kick very hard. Replied Karras, “We were too busy laughing at the very idea of a 63-yard field goal.”

1- he does make it look effortless
2-who and when did kickers start the “new” style of kicking?

Pete Gogolak in 1964 for Giants, then Jan Stenerud a couple years later for the Chiefs.

the fact that he took two small steps leading up to the kick was enough to to get over the crossbar is incredible

It's amazing he kicked that with such an absolutely statuesque kicking form.

I was at the game with my Dad, we were outside the stadium, because Detroit had the ball, we figured the Saints didn't have a chance. Then we heard the roar, we asked a guy with a transistor radio, what happened, he said we kicked a FG to win!

Really like that deeper looking gold the Saints used to wear back in the old days.
That Dempsey kick was legendary.
Thanks for sharing this.

I mentioned this in another thread about Dempsey's kick...
My Dad's teammate and roommate at Auburn, Jackie Burkett, was the snapper for that play.
