Saban talked Jalen Hurts into transferring to Oklahoma...

Before Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was dishing out touchdown passes on Sundays, he was a beloved player at Alabama, receiving both development and transfer advice from Nick Saban. When Hurts returned to the Crimson Tide and got overtaken by Tua Tagovailoa as the starting quarterback, he worked on his craft to become a better thrower. Then he transferred to Oklahoma, a decision suggested by the legendary coach.
"He stayed at Alabama, and I told him, I said, 'Look, you need to develop to become a better passer,'" Saban said during his radio show at Baumhower’s Victory Grille, via BamaOnLine. "'You want to play in the NFL, you're a great athlete, you have to focus on what you need to do every day in practice to become a better quarterback in the passing game, decision making, judgment, accuracy, all those things. And God bless him, he did it, and he got better. And when he had to play when Tua got hurt, he was a lot better. And I think that's what helped him when he went to Oklahoma, and we made that decision together, too."
quote:
"(Hurts) said, 'Well, I'm gonna go to Miami or I'm gonna go to Maryland,' because Dan Enos was the offensive coordinator at Miami and (Mike Locksley) was at Maryland," Saban explained. "He said, 'Well, I know those guys.' I said, 'Who's got the best players on offense?' He said, 'Oklahoma.' I said, 'That's where you need to go because if you wanna play quarterback, you've gotta have good players around you if you're gonna be able to play good.'
"And hell, I told him to do it knowing that we might have to play against him. But it's still what was best for him, and it's worked out very well for him. I'm so happy to see how well he's doing, how well (DeVonta Smith) 's doing, how well (Landon) Dickerson's doing, how well Philadelphia's doing. That's great."

Benevolent Little Nicky. Always looking out for others and disregarding what’s best for Little Nicky.
If anyone takes those quotes at face value, I have ocean front property in Kansas I’d love to sell them.

It's been nearly 20 years since Saban left Baton Rouge.
It's time to let it go.

All about ‘cruitin.
But I actually believe he told Hurts to go to OU, knowing full damn well if he faced him he’d crush him as Oklahoma is a paper tiger.
I wish more coaches actually coached kids where would be best for them. That answer is lsu btw.

I really do believe, while Saban obviously puts winning above all else, he does genuinely care about his players.

I can’t keep up with it anymore but either way, it has certainly done a number on you.

Hurts and Saban are kindred spirits. If you listen to Jalen talk to his teammates in the locker room, it sounds like Nick

Even as an Auburn fan, I always liked Jalen. He just always seemed like a down to earth guy who really only cares about winning. Didn't matter if he had to run for 120 yards at the expense of his passing numbers. And he handled his benching for Tua in such a classy manner. Never a bad word about Bama when he left. I've always pulled for the guy if he wasn't facing Auburn.

I get the Oklahoma year but Jalen still claims Bama and wears Bama gear to press conferences and Alabama fans root for him.
It was Tua’s team at that point and Saban wanted Jalen to do what was best for him.

Sounds like a coach who had his players’ best interest in mind, and guess what….it worked out for said player.

Yeah nobody but fans and idiots believe a word he says.
The man is a narcissist.
I remember him going on every show in America to beg the voters to let his team in the National Championship game.
The man would kill his next of Kin, if it gave him another statue.

Thus actually isn't completely unbeleivable. Jalen was a veteran QB that was going to sit another year, had come in to save Bama in the SECCG, and then they got blown out in the title game.
Tua was hurt, but you want players to see everyone in your process advancing to new heights and you don't want rumblings about who should play and who shouldn't.
It was a mutually beneficial decision that avoided any sort of underlying questions about the process. Not a virtuous decision, rather one that benefited both parties. Both players are now successful NFL quarterbacks. No need to think past that.

I don't think I have ever seen a modern player handle getting benched that well. Was glad he was able to come in and win the conference his last year with us.

Yeah I’m sure Saban was worried about Miami and Maryland

I was only in high school when he did the Miami/Bama dance, and I thought I’d hate him for the rest of my life, but I’ll damned if that man doesn’t say/do things that make me question if he isn’t a legitimately good man and even better coach.

With all he has done on the field, I am not sure why you think Nick needs to lie about suggesting a backup QB needed to work more on his passing and he should transfer to the coach that developed two Heisman QBs. What does he gain from that? “Come to Bama, when you are not good enough to play I’ll tell you were you should transfer to”?

He thought Oklahoma might sneak into the playoff if they had Jalen Hurts and he knew that would be a gimme.
