"We all three (Williams and two assistants) had stopwatches, so we're not professional timers by any means," Williams said on Fox Sports' The Herd, "but he crossed the line and I looked and I said. 'Wow.'"

Trainer Marc Davis clocked Jordan's time at 4.39. Assistant Bill Guthridge had Jordan at 4.38.

"And I said, 'I did too,'" Williams said. "I said, 'Michael, we missed your start and we need you to run it again.' And he said, 'Oh, too fast for you, huh?'"

Jordan lined up for a second attempt, and all three coaches once again timed the 40 at sub-4.4 seconds.

Only four players ran faster 40-yard dashes than Jordan's unofficial 4.38 at this year's NFL combine.

Hand times become myth...

I mean Deion apparently ran a 4.2 and Bo a 4.1.

They say Usain Bolt runs a 4.22.

That means Deion and Bo are the fastest men in history.

Is this where we explain the difference between laser and hand timed and point out it’s not really impressive? Because the moron who wrote that with the NFL combine reference clearly doesn’t know. That’s about a 4.62 laser timed.

MJ was a freak athlete, but 80s hand-timed 4.4 was probably more like a 4.5, which is still blazing fast for a 6'6" dude.

Not saying it didn't happen but Roy Williams is a lying scumbag and we all know it.

Current hand timed 4.4s are still more likely to be a 4.5 or 4.6.

This just isn't remotely true. You know how fast that is?

Quez Watkins of Southern Miss had the second fastest 40 time among wide receivers in 2020 at 4.35 seconds.

I mean what? Now Jordan is also a World Class sprinter?

It's like the third time this week he's run that fast.

Maybe in a 40. Not once they’re in stride, obviously.

The same people going into full meltdown over these comments were the same types arguing Wilt Chamberlin could run 4.5 a couple weeks ago lol.

You are very close. I coached track for many years and the conversion is to round up the hundredths (even a 4.31 becomes a 4.4), then add .24. With this formula, he ran a “real” 4.64.

With that being said, the formula was devised by using extremely experienced Olympic level timers. I ran our high school electronic timing system for years. We hired hand held backup timers in case of a malfunction. I’d compare those hand held times to the FAT time and they were consistently .4 to .5 faster than electronic. Having said that, MJ probably ran around a 4.8 electronic time.

MJ would have easily been an elite football player

Why he went to baseball instead of football I’ll never understand. He damaged his brand a lot more by sucking at minor league baseball then he could have by sucking at pro football

Bolt ran that in 2019 at a Super Bowl event 11 years after 2008. It was said Usain Bolt could have ran a 3.99 in his prime. Christian Coleman from Tennessee ran a 4.12 a couple years ago.

I don't know why this would shock anyone given how athletic he was.

NBA players are the biggest freakshow athletes in pro sports
