Birmingham has had a large stadium available for generations. The primary tenant plays D1 football, so 12-15K isn’t gonna cut it. They didn’t build a new stadium to accommodate Spring football. No city is doing that.

Unrelated to Birmingham but I went to St. Louis early last year and stayed downtown. Was an absolute ghost town Friday night, then all of a sudden around 10 am saturday morning downtown was packed with people seeminly within minutes. People kept doing this fricking screeching thing and I had no idea what was happening because I forgot that the UFL even existing. Game happened and after the game downtown immediately returned to a ghost town. Was such an odd experience, but damn those people loved their Battlehawks

They average about 20k per year the last 3-4 years, even with how shitty Dilfer did. Would love to see them get fun to watch again.
I've said for a while they should lean more into doing some thursday night games and such. I think they could get more of the auburn/alabama fans at a thursday night game. Play into the thirsty thursday type stuff that the minor league baseball teams do. You just aren't going to compete on saturdays attendance wise.

They still need to have the illusion of bigger crowds and maximize actual ticket sales. I’m not saying 47,000 is ideal, but 12-15K won’t allow you to maintain D1 status.

wow... proof of what a shite product the UFL is, because with every other league that has has a team in Birmingham it usually had great numbers and some of the strongest fan support

47,000 is awfully big for what's offered there and the city size. I can imagine that they felt they were setting the city up to draw and host larger events, but it seems like a 25,000-30,000 seat stadium would have been more fitting for the circumstances.
It's also likely that building a place with 20,000 more seats didn't cost much more than building a 25,000 seat place. Scaling and costs aren't directly related.

This was discussed when the plans were originally done. They looked at a 30-35k seat stadium, which realistically is probably the smallest they would need to go. The 45k seat stadium initial plans were around $175M and I think once it all came in, was right around $200M. The 30-35k was not going to be much less expensive.
The stadium has shown the ability to fit its capacity, in other areas besides football. I think the bowl committee hasn't done a great job in recent years with their team selections, plus bowl games are just becoming far less popular. Pre-covid when this was all planned, the bowl game more than justified a stadium need of this size. UAB has just been a curious one. I think it was a pretty sound assumption to make that when they were averaging 20-25k or so a game at legion, probably a 7-10k increase just one the location being better, was reasonable. If they got good again, could go even higher. They just completely decimated any momentum of their program re-start though.

Wonder if he will have the same type of comments about teams like Orlando? They need a great 6-8k seat stadium instead of their 20k one, really create a great energy and atmosphere then

That stadium was built for an MLS team to be the primary tenant and their attendance averages around 85-90% capacity.
Protective Stadium was built for UAB football to be the primary tenant, but UAB attendance averages below 50% of the stadium capacity.

I do think it’s funny too that they basically just cut the legs out from under the team. They float a rumor last year that the team will be moved, right after Holtz retires. Then after petitioned, they say it won’t happen. Then the league goes out and hired AJ McCarron as the head coach. Basically saying we don’t give a shite about your team and are going to tank them. And we are supposed to be shocked nobody went to the games when the writing was on the wall
