Canevari told a story about LSU playing Southern and Weeks was up to bat. Can't remember the pitcher, but he said they were dancing around the edges with pitches and had him off balance. They tried to sneak a 2 seam in on his hands the next pitch and seemed to have him, but Rickie was so quick he got the head of the bat around and lined one off the wall. He said Skip just shook his head. What ya gonna do?

Weeks went #2 overall in the draft, the 3rd highest selection ever for a Southern player.

And he did it with an administration that he had to argue and bargain with all the time. Pete Richardson and Roger Cador were great coaches on SUs campus but SU can't get out of its own way. Too many people worried about being the person in charge and getting their buddy a job they have no business having.

I feel like that's why Kerrick Jackson, who is a good dude and a good coach, left after two years for a non-coaching job within baseball (commissioner of the MLB draft league) before getting back into coaching a year later.

This points to a very interesting story. Southern's Danny Goodwin was not only drafted 1st overall in the MLB Draft, but due to an interesting set of circumstances, he was actually an MLB #1 overall pick TWICE (1971 & 1975):

"Goodwin was originally drafted first overall by the Chicago White Sox in the 1971 Major League Baseball draft as a catcher straight out of Peoria Central High School. He was the initial first overall pick in MLB history not to sign with the team that selected him when he chose to accept a scholarship from Southern University instead because of his desire for a college education and the White Sox offering a lower-than-anticipated signing bonus estimated as between $50,000 and $80,000.

He was a three-time All-America, at the NAIA level his sophomore and junior years, and at the NCAA level his senior year, and was named the Sporting News 1975 College Player of the Year. Shortly afterwards, the California Angels selected him first overall pick in the 1975 Major League Baseball draft and signed him for a major league record $150,000."

For some reason I read this as Rickey Henderson and immediately started reading it in an arrogant, 3rd person cadence

I heard a story about that game. Said he was coming up to bat and fans were chanting “overrated”. He proceeded to hit a home run. Got a bit quiet then.

I saw Rickie hit a 450' HR, off of Jason Marquis, into the 3rd deck of Old Busch Stadium at a 99 degree day game. Probably the longest homerun I've seen in person.
