Eh. Maybe if he didn't get Louisville in trouble.
I loved the fact that they were arranging orgies for recruits and a noted control freak like Pitino who damn well knows every move that is being made in his program tells his old buddy Dick he knew nothing about it - and Dick believed him!!

I couldn't imagine after hours in the Louisville athletic facility with Pitino and Petrino.
To answer OP, if I had to build a program from scratch, Pitino would be in the top 3 of coaches I would want to build it. I think he's going to get St John's to a Final Four eventually; getting four different programs to a Final Four would be an incredible achievement.

I'm just glad St.John's has him. It was a rough stretch from the end of Louie until now.

3 different teams to the final 4, and championships with 2 different schools. GOAT. Louisville counts. Dont want to hear about "cheating."

Wooden was pretty mid until Sam Gilbert entered the scene.

How old are you? Have you ever heard of John Wooden?

OP has not heard of John Wooden
Would be interesting to see how he did with everyone paying players but no denying his greatness over prolonged duration of time

I agree that I’d take Pitino over any other coach in history. Wooden had every best player at a time where winning a Natty was much easier because the field was tiny. Pitino has proven himself so many times it’s amazing.

And what skews Pitino's status is not his record at Boston University but his insane winning % at Kentucky, not exactly a paragon of virtue.
All Coaches need that ahem, "help" to enter rarified air.
But Pitino is a hustler in the achievement sense and usually gets the job done no matter his age, as long as fans aren't expecting Larry Bird to walk through that door.

I agree. He is passed multiple tests. Not just at one blue blood that funneled recruits. He is the best basketball coach ever in college

Wooden is undoubtedly a great coach, but it’s also fair to point out that he had a ton of advantages that coaches who came after him did not. For 9 of his 10 titles, he only had to win four games to win the championship. Also, for 9 of those 10 titles, only conference champions were allowed in the NCAA tournament. That meant there were national title caliber teams that missed out on the tournament. Additionally, there were no scholarship limits, so he was able to stack his rosters.

He won 88 games in a row. Some of you think history did not exist prior to 1980. Wooden that is. How may natties does Rick have?

He coached under the same conditions of his peers for that era.
They all had ample opportunity to "stack" their rosters
or whatever to beat UCLA.

In short, as amazing as it may sound, it’s possible to recruit about as well as Wooden-era UCLA and not win ten titles in 12 years.
Far more extreme than the talent Wooden had at his disposal was the success he achieved with that talent in a sport where championships are awarded to the winner of a single-elimination tournament.
quote:
Some have sought to explain that success after-the-fact by saying simply, “Sam Gilbert.” I recommend starting instead with, “Lew Alcindor, Bill Walton, and no three-point line.” A quarter-century after the three-point shot’s debut, it’s hard for us to have a proper conception of just how dominant Alcindor, Walton, and their ilk could be in the sport as it was then constituted. [...]
I doubt that non-amateur UCLA truly gained any tangible advantage over their opponents expressly because Sam Gilbert had showered gifts on players who didn’t know who he was until they arrived in Westwood. Gilbert made Wooden’s teams ineligible, not better.
