The big four were the Sugar, Cotton, Orange and Rose...

I guess it's been watered down so much, no one give a frick about them anymore unless there's championship teams involved.

Now it's football for shits and giggles.

Other than the CFP games they are glorified scrimmages.

The outcomes mean nothing.

And the matchups in the Outback, Citrus, and Peach Bowls were just as anticipated.

Now, unless it’s a playoff game, it’s meh.

I dont understand why they dont just go right to 12 team playoff with those bowl games being tbe elite 8 games or rnd 2

And add a cash payout to players for the finals now with this NIL bs is allowed. That might keep players from skipping out

Yeah, but growing up when many of us did, bowls that had no shot at fielding the AP/UPI champ were great to watch as well. Having 30+ bowls is a problem.

So you remember a time when bowl games were great?

Can you tell me the humans who made bowl games trash?

It sounds like the same people who liked bowl games bc they meant something real are the same ones who hate them now.

The Bowl game hype that we had in the past is officially dead.

I don’t blame the players for not wanting to play though. The combine is right around the corner and no one wants to get hurt in a meaningless game.

When Jaylon Smith got hurt in the bowl game that one year, it changed a lot.

I mean if we're being honest most bowls have always been kinda meaningless. But at least players weren't opting out.

As f'ed up as the NFL is, CFB has taken f'ed up to an art form in a few short years. The Portal, Agents paying players to opt out, and the abortion known as the NIL, CFB is headed over a cliff.

Yes, You didn't always have 1 vs 2, many times various bowls determined who would be the AP/UPI #1. It was great when they actually meant something.

But it was usually the big4 on NY eve and NY day.

I think we're looking at the past through rose colored glasses if we believe a lot of these bowl games, especially outside of the New Year's Six, "meant something."

They were always a joke.

How often did that actually happen though? Let's look at pre-BCS:

1997: Rose (only for 1 team) and Orange (only for 1 team)
1996: Rose (only for 1 team) and Sugar
1995: Fiesta
1994: Orange (only for 1 team)
1993: Orange
1992: Sugar
1991: Rose (only for 1 team) and Orange (only for 1 team)
1990: Orange (only for 1 team) and Citrus (only for 1 team)

Pre-bowl coalition/alliance, you could have 3-4 games played on New Years that would determine the national champion.

Meh nothing has really changed IMO except more opt outs. They’ve always just felt like teams were enjoying a vacation and playing a scrimmage.
