It's still fairly competitive in all stars in Jefferson Parish, but the rec leagues before all stars are very top heavy especially at the smaller parks like Cleary. Eastbank still puts some good all star teams out there in the 9/10 and 11/12 divisions from Girard, Lakeshore, Pontiff, Miley, and sometimes Cleary. When it gets to 13 and up, it gets watered down alot more. JPRD Eastbank still pretty much runs the state in 13 and up because it's even more watered down around the state. Westbank is done until 13 and up. I guess some of the kids come back.

This board hates on 'travel ball' but it is the only way kids can get reps and develop skills with like minded kids.

If they all played rec, the population of good kids would be present.

Of course rec is going to be filled with kids who suck when all the mid-good kids are in travel ball

What’s wrong with people?

Quitting rec ball was a non starter for me when I was young. It took precedents over anything I had going on with travel ball. I even quit travel ball for a couple years because I valued my life outside of it more than playing.

In 99.9% of cases, if you’re a good enough baseball player, you will have ZERO issue being recruited playing just rec ball and HS. I’d even turn down the big tournaments and showcase out in Arizona until I was ~17. No need for it.

Hockey, dancing, and gymnastics are the most insane, I believe.

I wish dads would teach their kids some basics who play rec, I’ve coached rec and travel — more rec and half the kids im teaching how to even throw casually at 11 years old…. Seems like a correlation of dads that play with their kids and those kids happen to be good at sports end up on travel teams and other dads, maybe OT ballers pay for their kid to be out on a field but havent spent a second in the backyard teaching them anything about any sports,

I played at the national level with various travel ball teams and in a local rec league and was having vastly more fun playing with my friends by the time I was in late middle school.

Yep, I see it here in our small community as well. I played Little League when young and the leagues were age 7-9 and 10-12. Our small river parish town had 2 teams in each age group. We played the neighboring towns. CSB

This.

And the travel ball team was a tiny neighborhood team too. We were all friends including parents.

But rec ball was so much more fun.

Why is it sad? Go join a travel daddy ball team of your liking and enjoy the prosperity.

I think it's unfortunate for kids who are possibly more into other sports but want to play with their friends, or kids who love baseball but just aren't that good. rec sports were fun.

I coach my 9y/o son and hated the idea of travel ball. That being said out of a town of 10000 33 9-10 year old kids signed up and out of the 33 there is maybe one decent 9-10 yo ball team. It’s just recess for the kids. I’m done after this year no one cares about it anymore.

When I came up kids still played every sport, including rec ball.

But parents were starting to have constant conversations about if that should still be the plan or not.

Drop in total players (rec and travel) since people have smaller families now?
