Funny that #3 was not even the best team that year

05 Texas could hang with 01 Miami, and maybe beat them... VY was that good. you are right though, Ohio state gave away that game in the horseshoe.

For sure, that Texas team was loaded not just VY. Their entire secondary was draft in the top 60 (first 2 rounds) plus loads of other pros. Unlike 10 Auburn. For me its 1) 95 Nebraska 2) 01 Miami. 05 Texas is a good candidate for 3, top 5 for sure.

10 auburn wasn't as good as 05 Texas.

or 04 Auburn , let alone 01 Miami and 95 Nebraska They had a transcendent player in Cam and Fairley was a beast, that's about it. They were 8-5 the year before and after, that tells you the overall talent level.

quote:

Only thing that happened in Columbus that changed that game was a missed FG from about 46 yards
The turnovers after the touchdown were forced and not mistakes
Not all turnovers are mistakes

Not sure what this is supposed to mean, a turnover is a turnover. I wasn't pointing them out to belittle VY, but was pointing the stupidity that he could beat an all time team like Miami alone. He needed key plays by the defense to beat Ohio State and USC. If Michael Huff, a Thorpe Award winner and #7 draft pick doesn't make the stop on White, VY is in the sidelines watching Lienart take a knee. Its a team game and 05 Texas was loaded, they deserve to be mentioned at the top of this list. But 10 Auburn simply does not. Newton a top 5 player, no doubt.

IMO their best game was a good bit better than 1996 Florida's best game.

Which was their best game? Because I think a 52-20 shellacking of #1 Florida State in the Sugar Bowl trumps any performance 2008 Florida gave during their championship run. '08 Florida's most lopsided victory in 2008 over a good team was that 49-10 victory over Georgia in Jacksonville. Georgia finished #13 that year and were clearly on the decline all season long.

no comparison between 05 Texas and 10 auburn, Texas was a much more complete team.

actually, the Ohio state meltdown after the Texas touchdown wasn't the only problem. Ohio state gave the game away with the Hamby drop and tressel's coaching. they made 5 fg that day, classic tressel ball. I also thought it was a mistake to line up for that 50 yarder that was missed and gave VY great field position. IIRC, there was some questionable play calling by Ohio state on that drive that culminated in the missed fg.

Not a bad list. I'd have 2008 Florida ranked a little higher. And 2012 Bama is ranked too high.

2005 USC and 2011 LSU would beat most of those teams.

With one of the worst pass interference calls ever.

Miami should've been back to back champs.

4th quarter. Both should've been first downs to close out the game before OT.

The "horrendous call."

Then...

Ohio State won the game despite the officials, not because of them. Keep crying about it 15 years later, though.

That's the worst John Cooper loss. He had stacked teams and this was probably his best. And they totally choked.

Cooper was a really good coach for a long time, but Ohio State's frickups under him were unreal.

His record against Michigan still baffles me, considering he often had the better team.

That Oregon team finished 8-4 fwiw and likely was better than the 08 Beaver squad. Akili was a great college QB. Unfortunately he wasn't fit for the era.

2004 Auburn was very lucky by being excluded from the national title game that year. You got to finish the year undefeated and invent daydreams about how awesome you were rather than watching USC wax your arse by 50 in the championship game.

Somewhere in an alternate universe 2004 Oklahoma got left out and knows for a fact they would have beaten USC had they just got the opportunity!

They wouldn't have scored 30, much less win by 50.

Carroll's USC teams were damn near unbeatable in big games unless you had a transcendent, god like player such as Vince Young having the game of his life. They would have beaten Auburn fairly easily that year.

Uh no. Only two teams on that list I'd take over 08 UF is 01 Miami and 95 Nebraska.

And 2008 Ole Miss?

2012 Alabama at 5. Is this real life? That team was total shite compared to Saban's other championship teams.

The 2009 Alabama Crimson Tide is the best FBS champion since 1990, case closed.

Wow 1999 Florida State completely underrated, behind 1 loss teams when it went wire to wire no. 1, played a tough schedule, and finished undefeated. Also, we're recognizing the 2004 USC team though its championship was subsequently vacated due to NCAA violations and is thus not acknowledged by the NCAA, the governing body of American college sports? Doesn't really make much sense to include teams whose championships were vacated, when other teams DIDN'T have their title vacated and thus maintain a national championship.

This is retarded. Those games were played, and people remember them. Regardless of how they were put together, that team was dominant. They won the national title game 55-19 for frick's sake.

That 1998 Ohio State team should have won the National Title - that team was awesome with stud players.

Still can't believe they lost to Michigan State...like 2008 USC losing to Oregon State.

I remember watching them easily beat #9 Penn State that year and Penn State destroyed Michigan State.

Michigan State lost to Oregon 48-14 before Oregon was Oregon. Michigan State needed two OTs to beat freakin' Indiana. They lost to Colorado State and shitty Minnesota.

The loss was at home to a team that finished 6-6. At least the 2008 USC loss was on the road to a team that finished 9-4.

That's the worst John Cooper loss. He had stacked teams and this was probably his best. And they totally choked.

Yeah, 1998 Ohio State is yet another example of why a four-team playoff should have been implemented years ago. They were the best team in the country that year yet they had one bad game where they committed an avalanche of turnovers and they were done.
