Rams want a ‘Tom Brady Rule’ after being burned on one play

Brady completed two forward passes on the same play in a Buccaneers-Rams regular season game. After his first attempt was batted backwards into his own hands, Brady then re-threw the ball and completed an eight-yard completion to Mike Evans.

Throwing two forward passes on the same play already is illegal and penalized by a five-yard penalty. But the Rams, who won that Week 11 game 27-24, found this to be a conundrum with no good options when asked to accept or decline.

Because Brady completed the second pass attempt, the Rams were left to choose between declining the penalty (giving the Buccaneers a manageable fourth-and-2 instead of fourth-and-10) or accepting the penalty (giving the Buccaneers another opportunity at third-and-15 instead of third-and-10).

So, the Rams’ rule change suggests that in this instance the penalty be five yards AND a loss of down, so the Buccaneers would’ve faced fourth-and-15. It’s a very logical rule change that should not find too much resistance.

I don’t Hate more plays being LODs plays.

I would Have to really think about which ones.

Maybe a double forward pass. But I get their point.

4 and 2 vs 3 and 7 when they’re gonn take 2 plays.

If you throw a second pass instead of running, the penalty should reflect as if the pass fell incomplete and you did not catch your own pass. Similar to how a Intentional Grounding reflects a sack happening.(LOD and the yardage on where the QB was).

5 yards and LOD is fine. Figure this will pass pretty quickly

Personally I think we are looking at this the wrong way

Go for the XFL model and make that second pass legal

Saban must coach for the Rams.

Usually it’s John Harbaugh crying about not knowing the rule book well enough every offseason and being mad that he was taken advantage of

Agree 100% that it should be a loss of down. Even if it's extremely rare a team should not be able to benefit from committing an illegal play like that.

I remember watching this live and thinking how dumb the current rule is

It should definitely be a loss of down

I’m going to resist making an obvious joke about the Rams and benefitting from penalties.

So basically the same as if the Bucs held Aaron Donald and bought Brady extra time to throw?

Seems like an easy tweak especially for something that happens like 3 times per season. I don't know the stats, but it doesn't seem like it happens too often.

Yep. That one regular season penalty was what kept the Rams from winning it all

Damn, that angle showed TLL punched Robey Coleman in the head while he was getting helicoptered to the ground. The Saints are actually lucky that they didn’t get a 15 yard penalty and an ejection of TLL on that play.
