TBH Shoeless Joe not being eligible actually makes sense.
Whether or not he played poorly in the 1919 series, he took money from a bookie and knew the series was being thrown.
If it wasn’t for the greatness of Field of Dreams and Eight Men Out none of us would even care about him.

Wasn’t Jackson acquitted?

I think they were all acquitted but Jackson himself admitted to receiving $5000.
The historical argument has been he either didn’t know what the money was for, or took the money and played his best anyway.

The entire eight were found not guilty in court but Landis basically said “You did it and you’re gone.”

Manfred did something right?

Except for the decades where he said he never bet on his own games.

His redemption arc is all that matters.

Looks like all the roiders who saved MLB after the strike will get in after they die. Big Mac and Sammy should have been 1st ballot. The 98 season saved baseball.

I think I read about a false affidavit for Jackson and when he was questioned in person he gave different answers, even saying that he’d never been asked a lot of the questions given in the alleged phony testimony. I’ll have to double check but pretty sure the actual testimony transcripts weren’t released until a decade or so ago.

Yes, you’re right I forgot they had all been acquitted. But there has been an info dump recently of transcribed testimony that questions what happened.

I mean, I know the stats you are posting are accurate.
I also know you only know or care about that stuff because of Eight Men Out, which proves my point.

The writers DO NOT vote on veterans committee selections, which is what this would be.

Tomorrow’s Reds game is sold out the 14 for Pete’s tribute. This coward jumped the gun bc he’s going to be there with a bunch of Reds greats and is scared of the Goodell treatment.

Dig deeper than those final stats. Go to the play by play ... it's available at Baseball Reference ... and look at Jackson's batting average in the games the White Sox were trying to lose compared to those in the games the White Sox were trying to win.
That's what a lot of people don't understand. The White Sox were not trying to throw every game in that World Series. They were trying to manipulate the betting line.
Also, look at the individual plays Jackson made, or didn't make, in left field during that series. Like the triple he didn't make the play on, because he pulled up and let it drop, that gave Cincinnati the winning runs in one game. A triple to left field in Crosley Field which was a bandbox with short fences. Do you know how hard it is to triple to left field?
His home run also came in the last series game with the score way out of reach.
Joe Jackson was also not a moron. He was not mentally challenged or intellectually disabled. He simply could not read or write, which was not uncommon for people in the rural South in his era. The man owned ... and ran ... a restaurant, a laundry and a liquor store after he was kicked out of baseball, and died with a nice house and plenty of money in the bank.
But the folks who think "Eight Men Out" was gospel truth and have looked at this for 100 years with their emotions and not their brains have won, and I'm actually glad, because maybe people will shut up about it now.
