John Smoltz on the Merrill vs Skenes ROY topic

quote:

We've talked so much about Paul Skenes, and deservedly so. But has Jackson Merrill done enough at this point to supplant Skenes as the National League Rookie of the Year favorite?

He has. I would give him an inside track at finishing the year strong to get him over the edge, because I'm not so sure we're going to see Skenes finish out the year, especially if Pittsburgh falls out of the playoffs; that could hurt him in voting. He's dynamic. It's not apples-to-apples.

When you compare rookies that play every day and a pitcher who's obviously dominating the way he has, I think Skenes would have the advantage if he finished the season and his team got in the playoffs. That would be a feather in his cap. But I think what Jackson Merrill's done and what San Diego's done, that's going to close the gap, if not take the lead, in my opinion, on an everyday impact player.

You touched on my next question: When it's a position player versus an ace in this award, do you personally give the former a bit of an edge since he's out there every day?

I think he should. As a former pitcher, I wish we had awards for each category, pitcher and position player. And ultimately, if you have a Dwight Gooden-type year, you're going to beat any position player unless he wins the triple crown. But I think in today's game, we have impact players that are young, they're making differences for teams. And we're not talking about a platoon rookie. We're talking about a guy in the middle of a playoff run that has been unbelievable of late.

So, there's a lot of that that goes to tie-breaking and, in my opinion, when you have a position player that's close to a dynamic pitcher, the tie-breaker should go to the position player because he's playing and impacting the season way more than a once-every-five-day-type guy. But it shouldn't take away from the greatness of Paul Skenes.

He has to have a “Heisman moment” tomorrow to turn it around. Good news is the Pirates have stated they have no plans to shut him down.

Still a glimmer of hope, but the trend is ugly..

Merrill -130
Skenes +100

Skenes needs a shut out tomm vs Rangers.

Merrill at 17 HRs. None in last 8 games. Hopefully that trend continues.

I'm not buying that. Of course they are going to say that but the Pirates are in a free fall and have a near zero chance of making the playoffs. The rest of the team is just going through the motions and he is their shining future star.

I’m possibly going to be in Chicago for Labor Day M/T/W and was wondering how to find out if Paul is pitching any of the games at Wrigley?

If they stick to their rotation schedule, he should be scheduled to start on Wed, September 4 - night game at Wrigley.

This surprises me. Pleasantly though, as I think all the unwritten rules concerning innings pitched and pitch limits are arbitrary and overused, but still surprised given the circumstances.

Even if he doesn't win ROY, he's still having one of the greatest rookie seasons for a pitcher in the history of the game. Great to watch a player like Paul Skenes find success.

Chris Sale, who will win the Cy Young:
14-3 140.2 innings pitched, 13 QS out of 23
ERA 2.62
WHIP 0.995
K/9 12.0
OBA .210
WAR 4.4

Skenes:
8-2 104 innings pitched, 13 QS out of 17
ERA 2.16 1st in MLB
WHIP 0.942 3rd in MLB
K/9 11.3 3rd in MLB
OBA .198 6th in MLB
WAR 4.4 Tied for 4th in MLB

The only reason he wouldn't win ROTY is if the Pirates shut him down, which there must be enough smoke around that for the odds to change this much. I know Merrill is having a great season, but Skenes's season is better considering he's actually in play for a Cy Young, and you can make an easy argument he's one of the top 3 or 4 pitchers in the league, if not the best.
Skenes has only played in 17 games yet has a 4.4 WAR compared to Merrill's 3.3 through 124 games.

Zach Wheeler 12-6
19 QS of 25

ERA 2.73
154 IP
9.9 K/9
WAR 4.2

Stats say Sale and Wheeler still very close, but its Sale -450, Wheeler +300.

One really bad start(5+ runs) and it could go either way. Still around 7 more starts left.

Chris Sale vs a bad Nats team today.

If Skenes has 8 more starts of the quality he has had so far there is no stat, other than cumulative, that says he shouldn’t win the cy young.
