re: Pate says he’s aware of dozens of players who regret hitting the portal

I know this sounds pollyannish, but lost in all of this is their education.
I know we're well on our way to "they don't get NIL to play school," but these still are college students who are making the decision to transfer to other institutions where their credit hours may not all transfer, as well as leaving established friend groups. Chasing the brass ring may ultimately doom them when their NFL dreams evaporate and they are still 2 years from a degree.

It’s the business of the students how well they handle their financial, educational, and athletic opportunities. Some will do well with them and others won’t - just like in anything else.
No one wonders if young actors, musicians, and social media stars know anything about paying taxes. No one gives a frick if a normal student transfers because he wants to go somewhere else, or he wants to change his major, or he’s homesick and wants to move closer to his family.

Greedy players are the reason we are in the situation we are in now.
If the players are greedy for wanting a piece of the pie they are responsible for, what do we call the universities? Slave owners? Gangsters? 100s of millions for the price of a box of blank diplomas. Sounds like a racket to me. Maybe we need to bring the universities up on rico charges. No doubt they conspired for a century plus to shaft the "kids" as much as possible. Their racket even has a central office and fancy moniker, the NCAA. No greater criminal enterprise in this country outside of the government.
Oh shite, they've already been brought up on charges. They lost, hence players getting paid. But sure blame the players. The courts didn't. The schools got off easy.

This thread should read:
"Young employee quits his job and enters the job market expecting a big raise. No company wants to hire him for that big of a salary and his previous employer has already filled his job with a capable replacement."
Some of these players have already made what it'll take me 10 years to make. I don't feel sorry for them.

There needs to be a standard / licensing put in place to determine who can get an agent.

I agree here and I think that number of entrants is pretty light it’s probably double that.

Why would you enter portal unless you know you have a couple offers out there?
That would be tampering

For sure.
Granted the people outraged at the moment are probably more exercised for selfish reasons relevant to their school's football program. And did not appear to have a similar concern when they were bringing in great players or processing players that didn't pan out

I get some people don’t like that they are making legal money. It’s the system that they have now. They aren’t doing anything illegal. They bet on themselves and maybe didn’t find the money, team, playing time they wanted
I believe a lot of the angst towards this is the ‘commit and sign’ just to then ‘commit and sign’ a week later.
Also the timing of everything is dumb. The portal shouldn’t be open while the season is still going.
If the CFP would finish up on Jan 1st or a couple of days after it might also help.

Some of these players have already made what it'll take me 10 years to make.
And not feeling sorry for them (which I don't either) is MUCH different than "I hope their careers are destroyed".

Why aren't you bitching about that and just about these athletes? What about the Sonic worker who someone said he should quit and go to Chick Fil A and it doesn't work out?
These people aren't any more important than millions of other Americans.

People always point out the “thousands“ of kids who go to the portal every year. They make this statement as though all of these kids are voluntarily entering the portal, looking to cash in and go to the highest bidder.
I wonder how many of these kids are basically being told by their former teams that it’s not working out and they’ve got to get the f*ck out. These schools only have so many scholarships and with better players in the portal, I’m sure a lot of these coaching staffs are essentially kicking these kids off the team.
For many of these players in the portal, it’s not about being greedy, Rather, it's about trying to find someplace where they’re wanted and might actually be able to play.

I wish one of these guys would come out and share his experience. This might influence some of these guys to stay put. What’s wrong with staying in a system and gaining experience and training while becoming a better player which will in turn help your team to be better?
Oh and maybe even graduating.
