Listening to Clay Travis, he absolutely eviscerated Derek Mason and Vanderbilt just now. He called the Sarah Fuller episode a stunt and a clear attempt by Derek Mason to keep his job. Vandy says they didn’t have a healthy kicker yet ignored the fact that their punter was perfectly healthy, punting seven times on Saturday and averaging over 43 yards per punt. He could have made the exact same kick Fuller was sent out to do at the start of the second half. Why else would you “squib” it to the 35 down 21 points if you weren’t trying to score a PR coup?

Because they have a good return man that you think might take it to the house. Will probably return it to the 35 anyway. Squib is a safe play.

Honestly think more teams should work on this bc in addition to above the ball could take some goofy bounces and u could recover it.

That all being said, this was definitely a PR stunt. Is there any video of her actually kicking FGs? I remember when Mo Isom actually practiced with the FB and she seemed to be able to make a 30-40yd FG if necessary. That being said, I’m sure there would be some guy on LSU’s campus that kicked on his HS football team that could’ve done that too.

It was definitely a PR move. I just think the argument about “why squib down 21” isn’t a good argument. Not uncommon to see overmatched teams do that.

Mason had coached pretty conservative season so it fit him playing the safe route.

Missouri ranks 13th out of 14 SEC teams on kickoff returns.

Quit making up excuses for why Vandy asked a girl to kick a ball 30 yards down field.

Not making excuses. Just saying the logic behind it. Mason has coached like that all year. Seems like he has been coaching trying not to get blown out as opposed to coaching to win.

The play fit in with the way he has coached all season.

He never looked like he had confidence in his team.

So purposefully giving his opponent good starting field position is his attempt at coaching not to get blown out?

Funny enough I don’t think she was ever supposed to kick it off. It was clear in warmups that she was only going to kick extra points. Her only chance to touch the field was on a kick off because Vandy’s offense couldn’t do anything all day. It was pretty evident in the game that Vandy had quit on Mason. I would not be surprised if it comes out that the players resented having the girl on the team. During the game she stayed away from most of the players on the team.

How exactly was this an attempt to keep his job?

She tried about 5 to 8 in warmups and made all of them but I think outside of one it was all low kicks. She said she hit one from 38 yards in practice but it had to take a few times for her to get enough distance for it.

It was a stunt and I appreciate the sentiment, but using this as a “girls can do anything” battle cry is so dumb.

There’s biological differences why girls can’t do “anything”.

Exactly. I can't birth a child. A girl can't play football.

Got to hand it to Clay. He found his audience and he sure knows exactly what to say to make them loyal followers.

“Stick to sports. wait, all I have to do is disagree with democrats and espn and I get tons of followers?! Hell yeah, I’m in.”
