The source for the claim of the slave related origin comes from a book printed by the fricking school itself LMAO

quote:

The university's byname "Ole Miss" was first used in 1897, when it won a contest of suggestions for a yearbook title. The term originated as a title domestic slaves used to distinguish the mistress of a plantation from "young misses". Fringe origin theories include it coming from a diminutive of "Old Mississippi", or from the name of the "Ole Miss" train that ran from Memphis to New Orleans. Within two years, students and alumni were using "Ole Miss" to refer to the university.

Footnote for the bolded part:

quote:

Sansing, David (1999). The University of Mississippi: A Sesquicentennial History. University Press of Mississippi. ISBN 9781578060917.

They both essentially mean "Our Mother" or "Leading woman of my sphere"

Notre Dame does not translate to our mother, it means our Lady, like you mentioned referring to Mary. Our mother would be Notre Mere.

Too bad that’s a lie made up by liberal media. The Name Ole Miss came from a year book nickname

The nickname was for the slave owners wife

Why are you ignoring the fact that ole miss' professor emeritus of history and renowned Mississippi historian said the slave related origin was correct?

This idea of Ole Miss’ nickname coming from that, didn’t happen until modern day liberals ran out of racism supply.

I mean your nickname Rebels is from the confederate army and your mascot was a plantation owner. It wasn’t until the late 90s rebel flags in the stadium were banned and even longer before you stopped playing Dixie at games. It doesn’t take much stretching to make your school’s nickname a derivative from plantation life as well. That is/was the school’s entire identity

I read that the name of the planet "Mars" is racist. Back in slave days, if the master was angry, the slaves would say "Ol' Mars Johnson is gettin red in der face." Hence, we call the red planet "Mars."
