O. J. Simpson, Something I had forgotten long ago

O. J. Simpson of the Buffalo Bills was traded to the San Francisco 49ers before the 1978 season for five draft picks.
2nd and 3rd for 1978
1st and 4th for 1979
2nd for 1980
He gained 1,053 yards and scored 4 touchdowns in two years then retired due to knee problems.
I was a big fan of his as a player, I loved the way he simply tossed the ball to the referee after each touchdown he scored. He was definitely one of the all time greatest running backs in college and professional history. However I never see this trade as a candidate for all time worst.

He definitely killed it.

What was strange about that was the executive in charge of the 49ers at the time, Joe Thomas, was a great football personnel guy. He built the Purple People Eaters Minnesota teams of the late 60s, the Dolphins dynasty of the early 70s and then rebuilt the Colts teams of the mid-70s with Bert Jones. Without knowing the particulars, I would have guessed he would have been on the other side of the trade.

All you have to do is look back at the history of the NFL and study the times when great players went to another team late in their careers. With a very few exceptions, it turned out badly.

I wonder what the Bills did with those draft picks.
The Bills started to turn it around mid to late 80's though I guess?
I didn't realize Simpson finished his career with the 49ers until that OJ Made in America Documentary.

He said he stopped prematurely. He wished he could've taken another stab at it.

Back in the 70s draft picks didn't have the value they have today, they didn't know what they were doing.
'79 draft Bills had the #1 pick via 49ers and took Tom Cousineau first overall.
The Saints with the 11th overall pick took a punter, not even a good one.
The 49ers drafted Joe Montana and Dwight Clark- 3rd & 10th round picks

I really loved the Naked Gun movies.
Would’ve never guessed Nordberg as a murderer.

There are still plenty of bad NFL draft picks today. And punters and FG kickers used to be drafted higher than they are today. The reason why kickers aren’t drafted as high today is ironically because of the greatly increased quality of punters and FG kickers. That’s made most punters and FG kickers pretty interchangeable with each other, so there’s really no need to draft one before the 5th or 6th round.
