By that time he was out of control. Again, he was rightfully fired. You can’t do what he did, especially to a minor.
But I ask this question: What would the reaction be here if there was no hair pulling involved, if the story was about a player cursing a coach (and I understand that is his side of the story) who had asked them to go shake hands with the other team?

You can do tough or hard coaching without putting your hands on someone.
He checked all the boxes of what every person in their gut knows instinctively is unacceptable:
1) Position of authority and a Male
2). A Minor and a Girl
4). Physical assault
5). Shocked the girl, frightened the girl, embarrassed the girl

We wouldn't know it because that's not a story. If it actually happened you'd hope a normal coach would talk to her not assault her.

I think the biggest problem here is we’re talking probably about a cranky 80-year-old man who seemed to admit in the story that he was out of place.

which I have offered for context.
And I appreciate that you did (no sarcasm). However it's not like the girl punched, slapped or spit on him.....(I would have given him a pass for that or even if she had made fun of his dead wife, maybe not a pass but at least an 'ah ok').

100% this.

Both not really acceptable in 2025…
Yeah the water one didn't go over well with the parents. Nothing happened though, nobody quit, got fired, arrested or sued.
Actually not true we did play better that game.

Mate if someone did that to your daughter there would be hell to pay

OK, the coach told a TV station up there (ABC News 10 in Albany) that he pulled the girl’s hair after she cursed him when he told her to go shake hands with the other team.
You still can’t pull someone’s hair like that and I don’t think they had any choice but to fire him, but if he’s telling the truth there was some provocation.
I don't buy the excuse the coach gave. The reactions of the girl before he puller her hair and her body language doesn't show someone defiant of wanting to shake hands after losing a game. It shows a girl distraught, saddened or deeply hurt by losing. Refusing to shake hands would be anger at the opponent and that isn't what she shows here.

Yep. Looks way more like she was crying cause they lost and an old ahole thought she was being soft so he pulled her hair thinking he was teaching her to be tougher.

I'm not saying the old coach was in the right.
But Coaches Augie Garrido and Jackie Sherrill would have been put behind bars for life with today's social media and woke-fest soft-feelings athletes and parents.

Nor should they have ever been

Can't pull someone's hair like that in that situation.

Girl’s father didn’t knock him out?

Steeler I don’t know if you saw my post above but he says the girl cursed him when he told her to go shake hands with the other team.
I saw it.
Still not an excuse.

I'd be going to jail with him.

Add his wife dying of cancer after wasting away. It’s not an excuse, but he really shouldn’t have been there.

I get tough coaching....my team was denied having water one game because of how badly we played the previous game.
Much worse and more dangerous than pulling a ponytail, imo.

I'd be in jail if that was my daughter. I'm no tough guy, but I would loose my shite.

Props to the girls teammate stepping in to protect her teammate. Even gave him a taste of his own medicine with the finger wagging in his face. Good for her for not taking no bullshite. Especially in the midst of just losing a close game in the championship match.

After watching that video, I feel pretty confident in saying that’s not the first time that guy has done some shite like that.
The only sad part is her dad didn’t break his jaw
