What they overcame to win the championship is mind boggling and well this years team is doing a damn fine job trying to pay tribute? I guess it just seems impossible. Didn’t seem to possible that year either. Family, Religion, and THE GREEN BAY PACKERS

They deserve a ton of credit and DJ Burns is such a difference maker but Marquette should vanquish them in fact I need them to for my bracket

They beat Ralph Sampson TWICE to end his chances at an ACC Tournament title AND national championship

underrated achievement in their Survive and Advance run

Excluding LSU runs, my three favorite NCAA tournaments are:

1983 - NC State upsets Phi Slamma Jamma in the final

1985 - Villanova with a near impossible shooting game to take out mighty Georgetown in the final

1988 - Kansas with Danny and the Miracles

Those also happen to be the only three times that the champion has had double digit losses since 1939.

To this day, I don't think V gets the credit he deserves for his brilliance as a basketball coach outside of the old heads who coached when he did and true students of the game because of his personality. From what I hear about him coaching, he was a basketball genius. He gave Dean Smith fits and had a winning record against Coach K, not many coaches can claim that. Long Live V!

People forget Villanova had to beat 2 2-seeds, 2 1-seeds, Maryland with Len Bias and Adrian Branch, and Dayton AT Dayton to win this championship

That run needs to get more credit than it typically receives, everyone talks about the Georgetown game and deservedly so but that run was just as impressive

What's lost to history with this legendary run was that, until Kansas played Duke in the Final Four, they didn't play anyone higher than a 4-seed (Kansas State), they got help from so many bracket breaks.

I heard an interview by Texas Tech’s coach before the tournament, and you could tell he feared what was coming. He kept praising NC State, their progress throughout the year, and the fact they had evolved into a different team at the end of the season.

9 seed Dayton in Dayton
#2 overall Michigan (who had a first round bye)
Maryland with Len Bias
#7 overall UNC
#5 overall Memphis
#1 overall Georgetown with Ewing

Damn!

It’s big talk in NC, especially in the Triangle. Great for college bball to have NC State, UNC, and Duke all in Sweet Sixteen.

This was the first year of the 64 team tourney 1 seed Michigan almost lost to 16 seed Farleigh Dickinson 59-55 in the First Round. Same score they lost to Nova in the 2nd Round.

My bad, I thought the 64 team tourney started in 86.

Jim already has a title. They're doing it for the 2020 squad that got screwed in Omaha.

That was a good team (ranked 16 to start the season) who underperformed early, found their footing a bit, then lost a key player to injury in ACC play. Whittenburg. Once they got him back they came together at just the right time.

They were a 6 seed in the NCAAT. So it’s not like they were bums (though they may not have gotten in if they didn’t win the NCAAT). The bracket somewhat worked in their favor when they got to avoid UCLA in the Sweet 16. In the Final Four they got a good, but not great Georgia who went .500 in SEC play team while Houston had to play top 3 Louisville team in a track-meet semifinal game.

That said, NC State still had to beat a great Houston team…which they did. Still one of the best stories in NCAA Tournament history. But I think some think NC State was a scrappy underdog team like a FAU or Butler of years past. They weren’t. They were a good team who failed to play to their potential until the very end of the season

During his tenure at NC State, that was kind of a V trademark of sorts. The 1986 and 1987 teams come to mind as well. 1986, they were .500 in ACC play, lost to a good but not great Virginia team in the first round in the ACC Tournament, then advanced all the way to the Elite Eight before losing to a great Kansas team in Kemper Arena in a game that was pretty even statistically but Kansas simply shot better.

1987, last time they won the conference tournament before this season, they were below .500 in ACC play, they beat a good Duke team in OT in the quarters, beat a Wake Forest team with Muggsy Bogues in double OT in the semis, then topple no. 2 ranked UNC by one point to punch their ticket to the Dance.

Now that I think of it, 1989, V's last contending team, almost made a deep run itself and would've played Duke in the Elite Eight but for a horrible call against the Pack in the Georgetown game.

Luckily we didn't have to play the what if game with this but I think after they beat defending national champ UNC in the conference semis they got in, winning the automatic bid just eliminated any lingering doubt.

This is lost to history but that particular UCLA team is one of the forgotten good teams of the early 80s because they got upset by Utah and didn't play NC State. They were a 2-seed, led by Darren Daye and Rod Foster, and actually knocked off Louisville (83 1-seed) in December 82. Coached by former UCLA great Larry Farmer too.

The comebacks they made late in almost all those games were incredible though, conference and NCAA tourney both. If they don't win the ACCT they are out of the tourney.
Then they come from way behind over and over in the NCAAT until they finally get a blowout against UGA.
It was a magical run.
