This is a big deal. If student athletes are considered employees with all the protections afforded by the National Labor Relations Act, they can unionize and collectively bargain over wages, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment. They will also be entitled to other employee benefits like worker's compensation. On the flip side, I'm not a tax lawyer, but if they are employees, I assume their "compensation" (scholarship) is going to be taxed. This could turn into a real mess.

This is a complete can of worms:
1. Are they at will, or a guaranteed term for 4 years?
2. Do they get minimum wage separate and aside from scholarship?
3. Are they entitled to worker compensation for the injuries suffered during play, or practice?
4. How does this impact the new NCAA football game?

Uh, so is any student on scholarship now considered an employee of the university?

Looking back to where we were and where we are, I really liked living the lie that college players were amateurs. Now, I'm just numb, but that might be the oxy.

Students on academic scholarships aren't required to put blood, sweat, and tears into maintaining them

People just had to ruin a great fricking thing didn’t they?

Free room and board, free food, free tuition for 5-6 years, I believe free tuition and automatic admission if you come back to school if you leave before graduation, no bullshite add on fees all other students (even those on scholarships) have to pay, free tutoring, free clothing, now fully legal NIL (I’m in favor of this btw), free world class health care,

But they were being taken advantage of.

You’ve never had to maintain a 3.25 while taking 6 hours of honors classes in a STEM major have you?

This one was always easy to me. The school would just withhold taxes

The big Football and Basketball college brands will end up being leased to companies to separate the universities from all of this. Probably end up like Minor league baseball when it's all said and done.

I should have used waived instead of free. Would that have made you happy? The point I illustrated is that the players do it spend money on it like average students do.

Hmm, you sure about that? My brother got his Doctorate from MIT, on scholarship, obviously. Was required to grind it out in a research lab and "produce". Best part, any breakthroughs or inventions I'm pretty sure became IP of the school. I will tell you, the money involved in the research side of these academic schools dwarfs athletic money.

most Division 1 FBS schools are state run universities, so it really doesn't matter what the NLRB says

College sports will now be true minor leagues. The schools will eventually be forced out of the game entirely at least as far as the players that are professional prospects. College athletics will be like NCAA Division III or NAIA teams.
