Just saw OSU fans tried to donate a kidney to the man and before a call for help could be answered he died! Sigh!

Very true.

So, so sad, man.

In the past few months, there were stories about Nate Robinson, Nick Mangold, and Scot Pollard all having defects and needing urgent medical treatment.

Nate Robinson needed a kidney transplant because of genetic kidney disease. He was on dialysis for a while and got a kidney transplant. His seemed the least complicated because he is essentially a normal sized human.

His father was a former running back at Washington who also went on dialysis and ultimately got a transplant a few years prior.

And then Scot Pollard had a congenital heart defect and there was a detailed article about his heart transplant process on ESPN. His father died of a heart attack at 53 while on a wait list for a donor.

I believe Scot became the tallest human in the history of the world to get a heart transplant.

Those were both complicated but happy stories. Unfortunately we can’t say the same for Nick Mangold.

May he rest in peace.

41. Same age as my sister. Jesus that's too young.

RIP to a great player and even better human.

It’s crazy. Said he was doing dialysis twice a week or whatever but other than that seemed like he was living a normal life and the dialysis was more of an inconvenience than anything currently

Was it drinking was he an alcoholic or was it steroid or other supplement abuse?

Surprised at his age and the money available to him he couldn't get a transplant they only refuse to give a transplant in certain situations

If you'd have actually read the entire tweet you'd have known he had a genetic defect.

As a hospice nurse, kidney failure (ESRD) is the one diagnosis where a patient (who decides to discontinue dialysis ...or simply can't tolerate dialysis bc it drops blood pressure too low) can be talking/sleeping/eating/etc. like normal and can literally die within a heartbeat.

If one of your electrolytes (particularly potassium, magnesium, calcium or sodium) are way too high or way too low, your heart simply will not pump. (ex: Most lethal injections on deathrow btw are just fatal doses of potassium or sodium.)

Yes. Not sure why you’re getting downvoted. My guess is that he got bad sepsis and ended up in the ICU. But that’s just a guess.

That's terrible news. Way too young. He was such a good player for a decade for the Jets.

May he rest in peace.

Which presumably crosses off his family as donors.

No such thing. Now if you were trying to say he was born with it, the word is congenital. But diseases are not genetic, they are cellular. Birth defects such as being downsy are chromosomal. Disease isn’t inherited. So the next time your doctor tells you you’re going to die from a heart attack k because your father did, tell him he’s a dumbass. Then tell him your dad smoked 3 packs a day for 40 years and that’s why he had a heart attack.

he was an alcoholic, who had kidney disease. Insurance and hospitals don't usually approve kidney transplant for alcoholics, which is why he begged on social media 2 weeks ago.

What more do you need?

I was diagnosed with this 3 years ago, but I'm holding steady at 70% function. Scary beyond measure when you first get news like that.

Some people are suggesting alcohol, pills, and steroids may have exacerbated his condition.

It’s possible. I’ve seen people with terrible alcoholic liver disease in their late 20s. If varies start bleeding they can be hard to stop.

That and you can only be on dialysis for so long before it does not work any longer. That sucks to hear.
