NFL Refs: Who are they and how do they become one?

I’ve heard most of the NFL refs are/were successful in their careers outside of football. Got me wondering what the actual career path looks like before they get to the NFL.
Were they were engineers by day and refs Friday night at the local HS when they started? How much do football refs make at the different levels?

First, you need some sort of vision impairment. Next, you need questionable judgment. Lastly, you need hubris. You have those and the rest takes care of itself.

Also you either have to be extremely yoked or a physic of never hitting the gym, just dieting. Also, it’s surprising how many black dudes have been refs. You’ll watch footage from the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s and see black refs all the time.

Looked it up and was surprised they actually make more per increase of gate receipt amounts. Varsity HS refs make between $110-$160 per regular season game.

Officials here in Georgia make $110 per game. $125 for the playoffs.

NOW, it would definitely help if you were of a certain skin pigmentation and/or a certain sex.

Walt Coleman is probably one of the most down to Earth guys you'll ever meet. He's not a lawyer like 90% of the other refs, he's from a prominent dairy business family in Arkansas, and, I think began as a HS ref.
He used to do speaking engagements around the state and said years and years he made about $2K per game in the NFL regular season and about $5-7K for playoff games, and about $10K for the Super Bowl.
That was like 15 yrs ago, though. I'm sure the pay is probably double that or more now, which means an NFL ref can easily make 6 figures for what amounts to a weekend job 4.5 months per year.

Just random dudes the NFL recruits from gyms. If they know enough about football they get a job.

Greg Gautreaux from Lafayette that just retired is about as good a guy as you’ll meet. He was also a high school ref. He had a full time job in the off-season as head of Laf Parks & Rec. Not sure how he became one, but he has some great stories. He was the ref that called the Santonio Holmes TD against the Cardinals. He let me try on his Super Bowl ring
Said he’s glad to be retired though. He said it was super busy, and he hadn’t had a weekend off in as long as he can remember. They’d fly out to the assigned games on Friday and immediately fly back to Laf Sunday evening or Monday morning.
Edit: just found this link that explains how he became an NFL ref. Good article. LINK

start out at the local level doing JrHigh and HS games
then you go to the Summer Reff Camps and get critiqued by College and NFL guys
once you get some years of HS under your belt, and make connections at the camps you should get an opportunity to do small college and JUCO level games
continue to go to the Summer Reff Camps and network
then you hope to get an opportunity with a D-1 lower level conference, most of the LA guys went through the Sun Belt/CUSA route
continue to go to Summer Reff Camps
hope to work your way up to a major D-1 Conference or maybe get an NFL camp invite
its all about your look, the networking in the Summer Camps, your attitude, who you know
this is the same methodology for basketball reffs

I've met Jerome Bulger, Julian Mack(NFL LJ) & a couple of other NFL officials as well as MLB ump Marvin Hudson and all of them couldn't of been nicer.
IDK about Jerome but Julian worked for IBM.

NFL refs are required to have careers outside of football

There's official shortages everywhere, I wish I still could ,it was fun. Pretty good money for a couple a hours, travel pay, cash. You think them dudes look fast from the stands until they run by you on the field(wow).
