A record-setting NCAA women’s basketball tournament did not just set a new viewership record Sunday, it obliterated the previous ESPN-era high.

Sunday’s LSU-Iowa NCAA women’s basketball national championship game averaged 9.9 million viewers on ABC and ESPN2, per Nielsen fast-nationals — up 103% from South Carolina-UConn on ESPN and ESPN2 last year (4.85M) and easily the most-watched title game in the history of the women’s tournament (records date back to 1992).

Not counting the Saturday’s national semifinals — figures for which are not immediately available — the title game outdrew all-but-two games of the ongoing men’s basketball tournament. Miami-Texas in the Elite Eight averaged 11.30 million and Michigan State-Marquette in the second round drew 10.91 million.

Sunday’s audience matched or exceeded every game of last year’s NBA Playoffs except for the NBA Finals (Game 7 of the Celtics-Heat Eastern Conference Finals also averaged 9.9 million) and topped every game of last year’s Major League Baseball Postseason except for the World Series, every NASCAR race since 2017 (including the Daytona 500) and every NHL game in more than 50 years (including the Stanley Cup Final).

Only 11 college football games averaged a larger audience during last season, including the playoff. The Rose Bowl had only slightly more viewers at 10.19 million.

Gotta admit these numbers are surprising. I’m wondering if they’re actually real numbers or manipulated by the woke msm

Funny how all the super sexist Southerners and Midwesterners support women's sports way more than any major city with a WNBA team

Not everything is driven by some sort of political spin.

You had an excellent matchup of contrasting styles that also included the best player in the game. Clark also has a very aesthetically pleasing game.

Holy cow. That's actually really impressive.

If she hasn't already. Caitlin Clark is about to make a shite ton of money off of NIL.

the fact that it was a good matchup with contrasting styles is irrelevant. its still women's college basketball with two teams from non major tv markets.

the fact that the ratings more than doubled from last year, drew more viewers than nba/mlb playoffs and many college football games, is very suspect.

If you've been paying attention to the sports world, it's not surprising at all. Caitlyn Clark has had major star power during the WBB tournament.

It's really not suspect at all. Again if you've been paying attention, the spike in numbers was expected due to all of the coverage Caitlyn Clark brought with her play style and showmanship.

Take this shite to the poli board.

Someone feed me some confirmation bias about how the trash NBA is dying because it's an awful league.

I can't imagine voluntarily sitting and watching a women's basketball game.

Women’s World Cup games, especially semis and finals involving US, do similarly very well. Definitely helped that Clark and Mulkey are maybe the two biggest draws in all of women’s basketball, but still.

Issue is that the numbers don’t really correlate to overall increases for the game. A ton of the people watching these big finals are female fans who just aren’t that into sports. They’ll watch these big one off games or events but they aren’t going to change up their entire lives and start religiously following and watch WNBA/Womens professional soccer/Wednesday college games/etc.

Yeah if it had been LSU vs South Carolina the viewership number probably would have been cut in half.

Definitely agree, but if you can give me multiple Reese/Clark situations (both controversial and relating to star power), then I'd be more inclined to watch the women's game. Everyone loves a good rivalry and competitive stars going at it.
