re: NBC's clock probably wasn't synced with the game clock

Debating milliseconds on this is a fools errand.
The real argument is why the frick they reviewed it at all.
To treat that last second like a forensic crime scene on a murder case at the end of a game where 100s of seconds had been arbitrarily lost and gained is stupid.

Have you considered that perhaps when they stopped the clock at 9 it was about to switch to 8?

Clock may have been different than official clock, but your countdown math is off.
9.0 or 9.3 seconds won't take a full second to hit 8.9 (the point at which you see 9 go to 8).
8.9 down to 7.9 will be longer.
It's just math

That's why I put probably in the title but the ref says after the spike to reset the game clock to 9 seconds. That to me means 9 seconds on the dot.

That’s my gripe. How many extra seconds are given or taken by a late whistle where they aren’t going to go back and say that he stepped out of bounds at 1:38.97 and they just say put it at 1:38?
The extra time given on analysis was only because it was the end of game when they wouldn’t do that for a random incomplete bobbled drop in the 2nd quarter.
That being said the .001 was when the defender touched the ball. Not when the ball hit the ground or he came down with it. There no way that he took less than .01 to come down with it or it to be deflected to the ground.
Even if he caught it from out of bounds you can’t blow it dead till he or the ball hit the ground and it sounds like they’re calling it dead on touch.

Learn the rules when complaining about the refs.
Since the Western Michigan player had stepped out of bounds, then touched the ball, the play is immediately stopped upon touching it

That’s not correct. When you jump from out of bounds the ball is dead the moment its touched

100K people with smartphones, where is a video in stadium synced to the play?
Posted on 9/6/26 at 10:29 am to Diseasefreeforall
It was synced. Remember they added a second back on the clock before the last play. Went from 8 to 9 seconds. NBC clock was synced.

I don't have a dog in that hunt but does anybody think if the roles were reversed would they have put a second back on the clock for Western Michigan?

You do realize the clock is a camera shot of the actual game clock right?

It's the stadium clock, which is the same clock the Big 10 replay official used. NBC is just superimposing it in the screen.
Somebody shifted the time by a half-second and they need to investigate who it was.

NBC doesn't have its own clock. They have a camera pointed at the game clock
Posted on 9/6/26 at 10:51 am to Diseasefreeforall
NBC’s clock was the stadium clock, dummy.

I’m not arguing with either of those points.
I’m saying that if a defender stepped out bounds and deflected a ball on a random sideline pass or deflected it from out of bounds or even intercepted it with 9:44 left in the 2nd quarter, the review crew is not going to look at that and say actually it was 9:44:01 and say to round it up to 9:45. Every single time they’re just going to call it when the ball hit the ground or when the last football move is made. They may blow it dead because they know he was out of bounds, but they are not going to go back and analyze his contact to the millisecond.
That is only being called that way because it was end of game.

If they want to say he stepped out of bounds then there should have been a penalty for illegal touching. No call was made and that’s not reviewable. They went out of their way to find a way for a second. There is no other way to look at this. If the stadium clock is not the clock used by the officials that leads to dozens of other questions all also pointing to Big 10/Michigan incompetence.
