This is going to be incredibly controversial but

Michael Jordan

Before we start jumping through hoops and making word salad arguments, let’s take a step back and acknowledge the facts here

-2x All-American
-2x National College POY (consensus 1984)
-1 national championship (where he was probably 3-4 in the team’s pecking order, I’m saying 3 bc he won ACC Rookie of the Year and Jimmy Black wasn’t that productive as a UNC player, Matt Doherty cmon)
-eliminated by Georgia in 1983 Elite 8 (not to mention lost to NC State in ACC Tourney)
-eliminated by underdog Indiana in 1984 Sweet 16 and shut down by Dan Dakich of all people (lost to up and coming Duke in ACC Tourney)

By any measure, that’s a HOF college career during the era with no one and done and no high schoolers going pro. However, last year Michael Jordan won the ESPN poll for Greatest College Player Ever. Yeah no lol. I know he played for Dean Smith in that rigid offense, I know Dean Smith has somewhat of a reputation as a choke artist in big games. But you’re giving me the talent MJ had supporting him his sophomore and junior seasons with him as alpha and they lose TWICE as favorites in both ACC Tourney games and NCAA Tourney games against inferior opponents? That’s not Greatest College Player Ever material to me. Shut down by Dan Dakich? Fouled out of the ACC Tourney game against NC State in 83? Lose to Georgia in 83? Not even make the Final Four again? Not college GOAT material, his college reputation’s helped IMMENSELY by his subsequent pro career. Hell, it’s debatable whether he was the best college player during that time, Patrick Ewing accomplished basically the same accolades MJ did in college FOR a less prestigious program then and advanced to the Final Four more, Big John Thompson has a reputation as a big-game choker too.

Reggie Miller--His sister was more famous than he was in college

Scottie Pippen

Mutombo--He was the other C in terms of visibility for Georgetown

How anyone can believe Jordan was the greatest college basketball ever befuddles me. He's not even top 10.

You had:
Lou Alcinder
Maravich
Russell
Walton
Robertson
Bird
Magic
Wilt

And a lot of guys many have never heard of that were more dominant in college.

Jordan is still the greatest ever in the Pros hands down, but his college career was top tier, and no where near the greatest.

Many others.

You left off Patrick Ewing who was a HUGE recruit when he signed with Georgetown. He essentially made John Thompson a legend, leading Georgetown to the NCAAT championship game 3 of his 4 seasons there. The 1985 draft was basically the Patrick Ewing sweepstakes (and is shrouded in conspiracy theories)

I actually think Maravich is the exact opposite case. His NBA career became wildly overrated because of his legendary college career at LSU.

there's only been one man that could hold Michael Jordan to under 25 points per game-
Dean Smith

Shaquille O’Neal.

Great player, but Christian Laettner ... well, that was hard to watch. And, Shaq’s pro career was so much better.

To the OP, well done. I was ready to hate your argument, but then I read your post and you made good sense. That’s rare around here.

James Worthy was the Tar Heels 1982 Consensus 1st Team All American, Consensus 1st Team All ACC, ACC Tournament MVP, Final Four MVP & scored 29/5 with the immortal game winning steal in the Championship game. Perkins & Jordan were fighting for option 2a/ 2b on that team at best. Talented Jordan , Perkins , Daugherty, Kenny Smith teams never made it past the sweet 16 the 2 seasons after Worthy left.

Obviously an elite College player , but overrated as a College player when comes to All time rankings based upon Pro career.

Mike Bibby and Jason Terry. Simon and Dickerson were the best players for 97 Arizona

This is a tough question to answer. There are not a lot of guys out there who were just alright in college, blew up in the NBA, and then were mistakenly remembered for being great college players.

The first name that came to mind was Devin Booker, but I don't think anyone really considered him a great college player at Kentucky.

Maybe Russell Westbrook?
