With point differential being a tiebreaker, some teams were forced to leave starters in to run up scores. Made things “awkward” for certain players.

quote:

New York guard Josh Hart said after Tuesday's contest he wasn't too fond of the idea that in order to advance, the Knicks had to run up the score on their opponent.

"It was interesting. I don't really like it," he said. "We were focused, at first, just about winning. The last couple of minutes it feels weird. At a certain point, you just start chasing points, doing all that. So it kind of messes with the integrity of the game a little bit."

quote:

"I feel like we were all trying to score but also respect the game," Donovan Mitchell said. "So it's different, especially when they took their starters out, you're trying to balance it… It’s definitely a little weird.”

quote:

“To be honest, it was a little weird, but the ultimate goal was to come out and get a win tonight, and that's what we did," Celtics star Jaylen Brown said, noting that that focus on point differential was more than a little unusual. "It's tough because that's just not how the game is supposed to be played.

"You've got to respect your opponents."

They’re right. They should do away with point differential and go to record in non-tournament games.

Running up the score in professional sports? The other professional team can take steps to prevent this.

I am fine with teams who score the most points getting the tiebreaker.

this whole in season tournament is to make people watch early season games. make them entertaining

I'm usually on the side that the players are soft but in this case they're right

"Well, just don't let them score" isn't the point.

There's a level of respect and sportsmanship that goes into any sport.

Have you watched the NBA?

They are okay with motherfricking each other up and down the court, but oh no don't run the score up, that's disrespectful

the issue is also just depending on if the team they are playing are out of this random mid season tournament nonsense likely doesn’t care at all and will let one team run up the score in the final minutes of final games, where if another game is two teams still in it there would still be some sort of opposition to running up the score.

it’s just not an optimal tiebreaker but honestly the whole tournament is vanity and dumb so who really GAF

shite talking, which happens every time dudes on this planet compete, isn't the same running up the score when dudes are obviously trying to save themselves for the next game because the current game is over.

How is it disrespectful? If they understand what's going on, then there is no disrespect at all. They aren't running the score up just to be assholes, they are doing it for a reason. If they other team doesn't understand that, then that is their problem.

Aggregate scoring is common and acceptable in Europe. We just need to adapt.

Yeah, I kinda don't think running up the score is a thing that exists in professional sports. Everyone out there is good enough to play professionally. Denver playing Detroit in an NBA game isn't like Kansas playing Grambling in a college basketball game.

Someone doesn’t have the slightest clue about the spirit of competition

In a game like basketball where 100 points per side is common place?

Score differential makes sense in a game like soccer where goals are limited.

I have never, ever had “integrity” and “NBA game” together in the same thought.

So they think it's weird. Got it.

In soccer it’s a sign of respect to go balls out for goals from whistle to whistle… shitty teams would rather take big losses than have the winning team stop trying
