Sources: Multiple NBA players have begun informally retiring Kobe Bryant’s jersey number(s) as a tribute — with Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie among them, changing from No. 8 to No. 26.

Hmmm...would the NBA retire both 8 and 24?

Given past precedent like the AD and LeBron number change issue, the NBA likely only gives a shite if there are a significant number of unsold jerseys in the current number.
Most of the players mentioned aren’t likely to have much inventory.

With respect to the man, I feel that's a bit overboard.

Dinwiddie is going to have a real shitshow on his hands if Kyle Korver dies soon.

It's the players deciding for themselves. If anything this is the perfect balance between doing nothing and having the league/teams do something unilaterally without the players really having a choice. Shows how much respect they had for their idol/colleague/friend.

someone needs to tell Terrence that 8 and 24 is 32, not 31.

I was responding to Rummy wondering if the NBA would do it league wide.

I just remembered Dwight Howard was going to ask Kobe to help him in the dunk contest :(

I don't think he wants to honor Kobe by switching to Shaq's number...

Isn't wearing the number honoring him too though?

31 was his number until this year, he's just going back to that. Article is worded poorly

Yes.
Changing it is Kobe cucking them from the grave.

Never understood the retiring #s in the first place.
Tons of people wore that # before the person you're supposedly retiring it for. Suddenly it's just their #?
Or why athletes care so much about #'s - players buying #s from other players to teams they were just traded to.
The # doesn't make you a star and since Kobe had two...it's hardly as iconic as if he had stayed at #8 that might be a different story.
There are a few iconic #'s in sports history that belong to them only:
#3
#7
#42
#23
#99
You don't have to look anything up to see who I'm talking about.
