Houston signed Trevor Ariza to back up Harden and Parsons.

And Parsons can be re-signed over the cap... so the Rockets basically get a free pass to sign him.
No, they were allowed to resign him. That contract still counts against the cap for the next three years, when he, Harden, and Howard chew up nearly the entire salary cap. Throw in Ariza's deal and you guys better hope the cap goes up to about $75M next year.
We'll see how much Morey is willing to spend when the tax bill comes due.

1. Nobody said anything about a championship piece. You are trying to move the goalposts. He simply said they improved.
2. They can go over the cap to sign him and still not be over the luxury tax threshold. The Rockets' cap space would be maxed out whether they re-sign Parsons or not. It's up to the owner whether he wants to pay him the money or not.

The Truth is a good pick up for the young Wizards.

Yep, there's pretty much no reason the Rockets shouldn't match Parsons. Also, 2015 free agency will be weak, and he and Dwight will most likely opt out in 2016 with the cap raising.

Really like the Paul Pierce move.

But back to Durant. There has been speculation all of last season about him coming up for free agency and leaving the Oklahoma City Thunder to play in D.C., his hometown. But make no mistake, this isn't conjecture anymore. It's real. The hiring of David Adkins, who coached Durant in high school, from the University of Maryland's women's team as assistant coach to player development for the Wizards this past week isn't a coincidence.

If you are a Houston fan, this offseason should feel like a massive fail. That should only be confirmed by the amount of pure joy the rest of the SW division is feeling at your expense. You had a chance to be dominant. Oh well.

A massive fail? No. We are still at worst the 2nd best team in the division. Lost Asik added Ariza and likely another piece or two. Losing Lin was addition by subtraction. Did we hit a home run? No, but it's not a massive failure by any means.

It's really only a fail in your were expecting to land Melo or Bosh. The Rockets basically held steady with their team this off season (unless they don't match Parsons, which I couldn't see them doing).
ETA: although you did kill all cap flexibility for next off season. I could see you moving Ariza then or mid season, as he's probably your best moveable asset.

I think they've bounced back well from the Bosh fiasco, and I hope they re-sign Parsons. They swung for the fences, missed, but still improved the team.

I agree with them taking the risk.
But they got rid of Lin and Asik's big contracts for this next year and got a good 3 and D player in Ariza which was a huge need last year. Ariza isn't a big name, but he would be a big upgrade for THIS team.
Now, I'm assuming they re-sign Parsons. They'll still have certain exceptions from what I understand, and can sign some other players.
The big splash didn't happen, but they have improved and still have moves to make.

So wait a minute rocketards. No Asik, btw the 2 big lineup was effective in the Portland series. No Lin, who is still an above average back up pg. missed out on all free agents except for Trevor ariza at 4/32 when he was untradeable at 4/23 a couple of years ago? Yeah, that's a home run.

Does anyone know the exact time by which Parsons has to be matched? shite was signed around midnight between Wednesday and Thursday. It's been well over 72 hours.
Posted on 7/13/14 at 11:16 am to ShamelessPel
Nobody said it was a home run.
Lin is a very streaky player and his defense is average. Ariza is a better shooter and plays better defense and can back up the 2 and 3.
Much better than having a back up 3 of either Casspi or Garcia or Hamilton or whoever was sucking the least at the time.
As for Asik, he only played about 15 minutes a game. The Portland series was one of the only times the "twin towers" was successful. They hardly ever did that during the year. Another player can fill that role.
They are going to be a better team.
