I realize that the old format was not very exciting, but you can't argue that it wasn't the most fair system for the drivers.
Hey, my all time favorite driver (Gordon) won all of his Winston Cups under the old format, and would have had two more since then if not for the advent of the Chase. I know exactly what you're saying
quote:
Racing isn't that type of sport though. It's about winning the next race or the biggest races of the year.
I agree.
The general public thirsts to anoint a champion, though. Hence, why college football places more emphasis now on winning a national title when back in the day it really was all about beating your rivals and winning your league, the rest of the country be damned. Just one example.
quote:
The champion is just a formality awarded to the driver who ran the best over the year, not the grand prize. If someone wants to run around grabbing top 5's to win the championship without getting a win, that's fine. I doubt he's more satisfied than the driver with 8 new trophies on the mantel.
Again, agreed.
I was happy as frick the last time Gordon won the Daytona 500 (2005, iirc). And winning those meaningful races are what drivers and fans are gonna remember most.
Still, though, I gain an equal amount of enjoyment seeing Jimmie do his thing. Just in a different manner, you know?

Read the Q&A on the OP.
A driver must finish in the top 30 in points. So Waltrip, Boris, Bayne would not advance by just winning one race

I like the new format, there needs to be more emphasis on winning. Racing to not wreck gets boring, I'm watching to see people go for victory lane.
Old system had people lose interest due to cup winner being decided with more than 5 races to go and the Chase races are on Sundays with football making them need some added interest. Too much making laps and not enough racing.
May not be the best format, but it's better than the making laps and sitting in 10th trying not to wreck we've been having to watch lately.
I'm liking the Ricky Bobby mentality

Danica Patrick could.
That's the thing I was thinking about--it's easier to rig one race than an entire season.

Screw that go back to the way they did points when it was the Winston Cup. Go back to racing to the yellow, and one last thing tell those 19 and 20 year old drivers to GET OFF MY LAWN!!!

I don't live in a trailer, have all my teeth, and don't wear wife beaters. Thus, I have no interest in NASCAR.
I put NASCAR one step above the WWE.
I love the NHRA though.

GTFO here with your tired and sad stereotypes.

quote:quote:Part of it is probably weather.
I have never understood why they have it in Miami!
That is a huge part of it. Up until the Chase started, Homestead was race 35 and #36 was Atlanta. The last year that they closed in Atlanta, it snowed. Race was delayed and didn't finish until after midnight (and this was a 1:00 scheduled start).
Daytona or California are really about the only other tracks that could host the final race and not worry about weather. Vegas too possibly.
The biggest mistake they made with Homestead was when they reconfigured the track. When it was first built, it was a smaller version of Indy, with four straightaways and four turns. They reconfigured it into a banked oval and it is just one more cookie cutter like Atlanta, Charlotte, Texas, Chicago and Vegas. It makes for boring racing.
While I would love to see the season start and end in Daytona, the plate tracks are too much of a wildcard to make one be the championship deciding venue. Could you imagine if all four of the contenders were caught up in a wreck midway through? What do you televise, the action on the track or the work in the garage trying to get back out on the track to see who finishes 30th and takes home the trophy?

That would actually be pretty compelling television

I think an easy way to solve the old point system vs. chase points system is to recognize the overall points winner. I don't know what you would call it. But you could have a chase champion, and another award for the overall points winner. Kind of like college basketball and regular and conference tourney champs.
I like that.
It could be like the Presidents Cup in NHL or the Supporters Shield in MLS.

Yes (on occasion for camping)
Yes (haven't even had my wisdom teeth pulled, come to think of it)
And, uh, occasionally

I'm black, and I don't find it in my heart to forgive the France family for how they treated Wendell Scott.

quote:
As the growing civil rights struggle in the ‘60s inflamed racial tensions, France reneged on his promise, and a pattern of unfair treatment by NASCAR followed. France denied Scott the rookie-of-the-year award for his first major-league season, even though Scott was the top rookie in the standings. When Scott won his only national race, NASCAR officials, fearing he’d kiss the white trophy queen, declared another driver the victor.

Yeah NASCAR had had it's troubles.
The NCAA used to bar black athletes from playing sports, too.
Doesn't mean I can't like stock car racing. Stupid argument.

It would be different for me if the France family did not own NASCAR.
I have nothing against stock car racing, but I'll be damned if I am giving my money (and I know it makes no difference in the France family's pocket) to the France family.

That's silly if you're actually a stock car racing fan.
Stick it to them by enjoying the sport if that makes you feel better.
Personally IDGAF tho.

I like the format to a degree but I find major faults in the location of the last race and the format of the last race. What is to keep one of the contending four drivers from using his bumper a little too liberally? Especially if he gets a couple of laps down and has absolutely nothing to lose.
