I always hate these discussions.
Who could beat the 01 Miami Hurricanes?
I would go with any team that finished the season #1. Most teams that finished #2.
When you get to that level of competition, you introduce parity. It's like the NFL. Even the indisputable "best" teams get beat a few times a year.
Miami could lose. Pressure Dorsey. Slow the run game. Control the clock with your own run game. Make a few big plays. Game over.

Teams play at different levels at different times of the year.
I'd think that USC would have probably beaten that AU team, although I think AU would have given them a better game than OU.

Difficult to disagree with any of that
I actually think a team like 2011 LSU could give them fits just because the special teams was so outstanding. They'd have to play a perfect game with how mediocre the QB play was though.

I'll remind you that Jefferson was the QB of that team and Miami's secondary included of Ed Reed, Phillip Buchanon and Mike Rumph starting and Sean Taylor, Kelly Jennings, and Antrel Rolle on the bench.

On paper, Nebraska 95 is the only team better than 01 Miami. However, if some mythical matchup could have occurred between 01 Miami and some other all time teams like 04 usc, 05 Texas or usc, 08 Florida etc. all those teams would have a legit shot at winning because history has shown us that Larry Coker was a garbage coach, and give Pete Carroll, urban Meyer or nick Saban a month to prepare against Coker and I don't like 01 miami's odds of winning.
11 bama could hang, although miami's offense was more explosive than bama(Dorsey in his junior year was better than a first year mccarron) but Alabama would hold a huge coaching edge. The same can't be said for 11 lsu, Miami would beat them worse than Alabama did.

Well, the last game before the bowl went down like this:
USC beat a 6-6 UCLA team by 5 points in a game that went down to the final play of the game.
AU beat a 9-2 very good Phil Fulmer Tennessee team in the SECCG. Leading 21-7 at half and 28-7 in the third, AU coasted to an easy win against a vastly better team.

How many BS PI calls would it take?

Florida was the second-best team that year. They had the best shot that year.
Had Florida not choked against Tennessee, they would've played Miami for the title. Remember that game was moved back because of 9/11.
I think Florida would've given Miami a much tougher game than Nebraska did.

The only team that actually did.

3. 1908 LSU
4. 2011 LSU (if JL is playing QB)
5. 2004 USC or Texas
6. 2012 Bama

He was right. Now we can look back in retrospect and see Auburn had more and better NFL talent in 2004. USC had a lot of bust.

Not only were we more talented than USC, we played a harder schedule and were challenged less often against that harder schedule. Throw in we played better against the only common opponent and the coach (likely to be in the college football HOF) flat out said we were better and well...

Common opponent theory to the rescue!

1995 Nebraska
Not as talented, but ran their system better than any team in modern history. They ran for 400 yards per game in what was at the time one of the best conferences in the country. They only won one game by fewer than 24 points.

Or strength of schedule. Or close games. Or nfl success.
Or common opponent as you note.
Take your pick. All favor AU.
