That system worked for a 100 years.
The product was making billions of dollars for 100 years.
Old arse men hating young people making sometimes generational money so a football team can be what they perceived as “better” or “more pure” is some embarrassing shite.
I’m thrilled these guys are able to make money. Nico thought he could, overplayed his hand, and now he can’t. He’s a dumbass for doing that. That’s exactly how it’s supposed to work

You dont actually believe that. You just don’t like this specific ruling
umm i been saying that for years on here and even broke down that the services rendered from most P5 schools, but especially SEC and Big10 teams, had a value of over 500k minimum. when you think room and board, tution, 30-40k in stipend, clothing, food, the personalized coaching, personalized trainer, doctors etc
and no i actually am ok with the ruling and believe it was correct other than the voluntary org part

Oh, so what the real adults have been saying for decades? Got it
most here were against this before the last year or two.

That’s this great system of yours working?

Yeah the sport has never been better! Glad the extremely tiny minority of whiners that pounded their fists about the above have gotten their way
They should be paid if another corporation is making millions off of their likeness, outside of the physical game itself. Saying different is ignorant and selfish
Models get paid, singers get paid, actors get paid, normal citizens get paid...anytime their likeness is used for profit .
To avoid all of this, all EA had to do is get with the ncaa, set up a CAPPED amount paid to those previewed in the games, and send to players.
They fricked it up, left it open to litigation, and got handed their arse.

Everything's fine boys. The sport has never been bigger or better than it is now. Nothing to see here.
Most of these guys are still 3 years from their 21st birthday when recruited and they suddenly get the offers of their life with pretty much zero obligations. What could go wrong?

thing is they really werent making that. Revenue sure but there has always been less than 20 or so colleges that made a profit overall as an AD
i understand that most of that is because of the drain of secondary sports
but overall for 90%+ of member institutions, sports were a drain on the university

None of that is any of your business

To all the John's out there. When you purchase the services of a prostitute, you probably have to deal with their pimps

Jay Bilas probably loves this. I can't stand the guy. He will never say ANYTHING bad about NIL. They need contracts and a CBA. End this bullshite.

Is that still the case?
I remember that being true back like 20 years ago, but there's A LOT more money in college sports in 2025 vs 2005.

As the ticket prices, licensing deals and, most importantly, TV contracts continued to get bigger and bigger, the NCAA held firm that football and basketball were "amateur" sports where a scholarship (which isn't actually income/revenue, but rather just a cost avoidance) was equivalent compensation. It was an antitrust action waiting to happen.
However, this didn't just arise suddenly in 2021 or so. This inevitably had been coming for YEARS. Yet, the NCAA, conferences and schools took zero steps to be proactive. It was like watching the floodwaters slowly rise, yet just maintaining the mindset of "meh, it will stop eventually." Of course, it didn't, and suddenly the house is flooded and completely destroyed.
The players are just adapting to the marketplace they are in. All of us would in that situation no matter what internet high horse we pretend to be on. But in reality it is the FANS that are driving it. Nico knew he could try to leverage Tenn. The school called his bluff. Which they had to. But are fans going to feel the same if Tennessee is 7-5 or 6-6 next season because Tenn suddenly lost their starting QB? Will they give the HC a "pass" for unfavorable results after being put in a tough spot? Or will they demand he be fired for not winning enough? It is likely the later. Which means the next time the HC will pay the ransom because failing to do so could mean his job.
Instead of whing and crying about the "way it use to be", which isn't coming back. The NCAA and conferences need to accept reality and be proactive.

Inevitably when it evolves, I'm waiting for the big ticket guys to become staunch Republicans.
When they get 50% of their monies spread out amongst the rest of the team, they will be screaming for a flat tax and wanting to play for St George University

it was mainly wasted on facilities and the like though and more and more services, coaching etc
sure admin staff and salaries grew and so did coaching salaries but most of that was to attract better and better staffs.
ftr i 100% get your point and the libertarian in me agrees, even the rational side does. But the CFB fan in me hates it because in many ways it is ruining the sport
thing is though, we dont really know the worth of the actual players because the fan bases are built around the name on the side of the helment not the player itself.
real NIL is fine but when you start doign things like the collective...that is where its not real NIL value too.

Imagine if Joe burrow held out before the playoffs
He could have made lsu pay him millions. The system is asinine

I actually disagree with you here, at least in the short term, but it’s really neither here nor there in the context of this discussion
