Michael Chang winning the French to me is the biggest WTF moment.
He 1 1 1 Pistol Pete in 3rd rd
He pulls his stupid match vs Lendl in 4th
Beats some Russian who beat Wilander in Semis
Then beat Edberg in the Finals

That was a crazy run. But, I think he did make three other major finals. So, it wasn't a total fluke.

Carlos Sastre winning the 2008 TDF after Astana was barred from entry.
Lleyton Hewitt winning Wimbeldon in 2002 after 15/17 top seeds lost before the Quarters.
Danny Willett winning the 2016 Masters (I remember Spieth's epic choke but couldn't have told you who won in a million years).
Sid Vicious being 2x WCW and 2x WWF World Heavyweight Champ.

I’ll raise you Shaun Micheel. He won the 2003 PGA. That’s his only PGA Tour win.

Jason White won a Heisman

Paul Lawrie winning the 1999 Open Golf. Most people remember Jean Van De Velde choking on the 18th.

His stats from that Heisman season were far from the worst of many Heisman winners that have been named in here
He actually had a great season the year he won the Heisman and definitely should have gotten it that year

Was Babe Ruth a good player? According to that logic, none of us will ever know.
Are you under the impression that the only knowledge I have of Babe Ruth is a stat line i looked up after not knowing who he was?
Id say 2% of my knowledge of Ruth is based on stats.

But as a college player, and that year in particular, him winning wasn't a surprise. He was one of the favorites. Should've never been drafted where he was as an "old" draftee but in college he was exceptional.

Rich Gannon’s 2002 NFL MVP is pretty forgettable.

Rich Beem won the PGA the year before in 2002. What an awful time for the PGA following what Tiger did in 2000-2001.
2002-2008 or so were abysmal years for golf.

I specifically didn't mention Beem because he actually was memorable. Tiger birdied like 14-18 on the back 9 and still came up a shot short. A nobody shrugging off Tiger shooting aces when the World's Top 10 continually wilted was huge to watch.

This one gets unfairly mentioned because of how horrid he was in the national title game, but White had a legitimately great season in 2003 and was a worthy winner. Through their first 11 games, 2003 Oklahoma looked like one of the best college football teams of all time. To this day, I still cannot explain why they sucked so badly in their last 2 games.
I believe the Heisman voting should be done after bowl season, though.

quote:Lol, not a great take, SportsGuy. Anybody who watches the NBA knows who Rudy Gobert is and that he’s a perennial defensive player of the year candidate. He’s not a forgettable, random winner by any stretch of the imagination.
Rudy Gobert
NBA Defensive Player of the year, apparently 2 years in a row (2017 and 2018).
Don’t really watch the NBA and barely heard of him. Shows how much attention defense gets in the NBA.
It’s like looking at NFL defensive players of the year and going “who is this random JJ Watt fella?”
