Smart move at a super low cost with zero risk. Classic A's.

Astros are getting desperate for starting pitching. Brad Peacock was supposed to be activated tomorrow but was instead sent back to Houston with shoulder soreness. Framber Valdez starts on 4 days rest (which is fine because he got chased in the first inning of his last start)

Tuesday appears to be a bullpen game. Top prospect Forrest Whitley is in rookie ball for a mental reset, 2nd best pitching prospect just had Tommy John, 2 other AAA starters are on the IL, 2 others were just optioned and aren't eligible to return yet and the last option on the 40 man just threw 5 or 6 innings on Friday.

This is a disaster.

I get the feeling yall are going to be involved for Bumgarner. But hes just been rough after dealing with all of these injuries the last few years

I think the Astros will look to get a pitcher with control at least through next season. If Luhnow is going to give up his precious prospects, he'll want to kill two birds with one stone in a trade.

We were supposed to have some quality pitching depth in he minors this year but that went to shite in a hurry. Between injuries and ineffectiveness, that presumed depth evaporated quick. Most of a starters at AAA have ERAs above 5....the ones who don't have been called up and gotten shelled.

At this point, adding a starter isn't an "ideal upgrade" it's an absolute necessity. Not a great leverage situation for Luhnow.

Pitching prospects are like barn cats. Things happen to them so you don't ever have too many (or maybe enough).

: Despite the fact that teams aren't able to make trades in August anymore, the market hasn't picked up yet, aside from the Red Sox acquiring Andrew Cashner from the Orioles and the A's picking up Homer Bailey from the Royals.

Perhaps it's because asking prices remain "enormous," Buster Olney reports in an article for ESPN+ (subscription required), citing conversations with executives around baseball. According to Olney, teams are requesting "very high-end prospects," even for rentals such as the Mets' Zack Wheeler.

The moves lunhow could have and should have made and he's been rear ended again by better GMs.

Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com reports that closer Mychal Givens is drawing interest and is “definitely” available — a departure from recent seasons under previous front office management. The Phillies and Nationals, in particular, have interest in Givens, per the report. Obviously, a deal with the Nats would be difficult to hammer out when the two clubs continue to be embroiled in the ongoing dispute over MASN television rights fees.

GM Jeff Luhnow told The Athletic’s Jake Kaplan(subscription required).  “It all depends on whether or not we’re able to acquire a starter and what that means for the rest of the rotation and maybe when [Brad] Peacock’s going to come back and be healthy and all of that,” Luhnow said.  “So, there are a lot of variables.  But we’ve never ruled out looking at relievers.  In fact, several of the pitchers that we have on our wish list are relievers.”

Some just for fun ideas from MLB.com about deals.... None of these are real
quote:

Atlanta gets: LHP Madison Bumgarner and LHP Will Smith

San Francisco gets: RHP Bryse Wilson, LHP Kolby Allard and OF Justin Dean

quote:

Milwaukee gets: RHP Trevor Bauer

Cleveland gets: OF Trey Mancini; RHP Dylan Bundy and RHP Mychal Givens

Baltimore gets: SS Brice Turang, OF Tristen Lutz, RHP Zack Brown, C Mario Feliciano, RHP Nick Sandlin and SS Marcos Gonzalez

quote:

Minnesota gets: RHP Marcus Stroman and RHP Ken Giles

Toronto gets: RHP Brusdar Graterol, SS Wander Javier, RHP Griffin Jax, OF Gabriel Maciel and LHP Ryley Widell

quote:

Houston gets: RHP Zack Wheeler

New York gets: RHP J.B. Bukauskas, INF Jeremy Pena

quote:

New York gets: LHP Matthew Boyd

Detroit gets: OF Estevan Florial, C Anthony Seigler and OF Antonio Cabello

The Yankee one is horrible, putting a guy who already gives up home runs in NY for that price, the Yanks 1,6, and 9 rated prospects

Labeling Wilson as a AAAA pitcher this early in his career is a bit much. He’s 21 and already pitched in the majors. Also throws ~95. Worst case scenario he could like be an effective and controllable bullpen piece.

The Mets will place right-hander and top trade candidate Zack Wheeler on the injured list today due to shoulder fatigue, reports Newsday’s Tim Healey (Twitter link). It’s not clear how long Wheeler would stand to miss, but even if the move is backdated the maximum three days, Wheeler still he won’t be able to return until July 23. As Healey points out, that’ll give him a maximum of two starts before the deadline even in a best-case scenario for the Mets. Lefty Steven Matz will start in place of Wheeler tomorrow.

Bryce Wilson is considered a top 100 prospect and either him or Kyle Wright will most likely headline any trade the Braves make. The Braves aren’t trading Pache, Anderson, or Waters. The deal is fine if it’s just for MadBum but probably needs another top 10 Braves prospect for both if not more.

People are way overvaluing MadBum based off his playoff performance a few years back. He’s a rental 3/4 starter at this point and no team is going to give up multiple top 100 prospects for him.

The Brewers and Giants have been in talks about a potential trade that would send lefty Will Smithfrom San Francisco back to Milwaukee, reports Robert Murray of The Athletic (subscription required). The Giants are particularly interested in second base prospect Mauricio Dubon, per Murray, though he specifies that no deal is close between the two clubs.
