Would expect the Mets to hold on to Wheeler at this point now and extend a qualifying offer in the off seasons. A compensatory pick would likely be better than what anybody will offer for him coming off a shoulder injury.

Of course it could turn into a Keuchel/Kimbrel situation where no one signs him until June and they end up with nothing.

I’d like to see some kind of international bonus money given to the clubs or something in this instance. Even if it’s a small amount. Players turning down qualifying offers then signing later where the club doesn’t get anything. The team acted in good faith to extend it.

I still remember when the Giants traded Wheeler for Beltran. I wonder what the market for Wheeler will be this offseason. He’s got great stuff but hasn’t pitched over 200 innings in a season in his career.

The Cubs are seeking a left-handed reliever in advance of the July 31 deadline, but one of their own southpaws – Mike Montgomery – “has been involved in trade talks,” Jesse Rogers of ESPNChicago.com writes. However, it’s unclear whether there’s a deal featuring Montgomery on the horizon.

Ken Rosenthal

The #Royals have pulled Martin Maldonado from their game. Have been working on a trade. Team not yet known.

The Royals pulled catcher Martin Maldonado from their game Monday, likely because a deal is on the way. They’ve been “working on a trade” involving Maldonado with an unknown team, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. A trade is indeed “close,” Mark Feinsand of MLB.com adds on Twitter.

I have a bad feeling that this means Contreras is hurt worse than they're letting on.

That's weird, I was watching the game on Sunday and they said the foot pain was from a new pair of spikes.

Conteras is heading to the injured list with a strain of the arch muscle on his right foot, Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic was among those to report. The Cubs don’t expect Contreras to need longer than the minimum 10-day IL stint, Sharma adds.
