Heyman considers it unlikely that the Indians’ will trade Trevor Bauer (controllable through 2020) or the Rangers with deal Mike Minor (controllable through 2020) while they are in the thick of the postseason race. And although the Yanks like impending free agent Zack Wheeler, Heyman gets the sense that the organization doesn’t think it can pry him from the crosstown Mets without a major overpay.
That leaves Bumgarner (a free agent after this season) and Stroman (controllable through 2020), though the Yankees are "not that enamored" with either pitcher, according to Heyman. It's unclear which of the two New York prefers, but Heyman thinks the club should go after Bumgarner because of his postseason resume.

Cashman also acknowledged that 20-year-old right-hander Deivi Garcia, recently promoted to Triple-A, is “pushing himself into the mix” as an option to help at the big league level. The diminutive Garcia, listed at just 5’9? and 163 pounds, breezed through Double-A opposition with a 3.00 ERA, 14.3 K/9, 4.4 BB/9, 0.35 HR/9 and a 41.9 percent ground-ball rate in 51 innings of work prior to his promotion.

The Indians have acquired righty Phil Maton from the Padres, per a club announcement. International bonus poll space is headed to San Diego in the deal.
In other moves, the Friars announced that that they have selected the contract of righty Andres Munoz. That explains the need to free a 40-man roster. Catcher Austin Allen is also coming to the majors, with backstop Austin Hedges and lefty Eric Lauerbeing moved to the bereavement list.

Giants closer Will Smith looks like one of the majors’ most obvious trade chips as the July 31 deadline nears. The left-handed All-Star has already drawn interest from multiple teams, and St. Louis is among those that will join the fray for Smith, according to Jon Morosi of MLB.com. As long as they remain in playoff contention, the Cardinals “are poised to pursue” Smith this month, Morosi writes.

@JeffPassan
Starter Homer Bailey has been traded to Oakland from Kansas City, sources tell ESPN. He's making the minimum, so the A's will pay him only $250,000 or so for the remainder of the season.
